Political corruption has been a problem since the first Europeans settled in America. From officials to politicians, laws are circumvented to obtain riches and/or power. Actually, such is "Common to Man". Ask any police department and they can list thousands of excuses of why folks didn't do the right thing and did the wrong.
I believe the first point of Calvinism - "Total Depravity" is where this would fall under.

We've always had political corruption, but today it seems to be at the in-your-face level. Even at minor state and local levels it seems politicians want to get elected only to loot the treasury and don't give a damn when they are found out, i.e. "I got mine". Until STIFF jail sentences are handed out, it will only get worse.
