As you noted, engineers are trained to Get Things Right. When I started at Virginia Tech, the first thing taught in the first engineering class was that lives will ride on your work. Error is fatal.
Truer words were never written. On top of that, we engineers are trained how to think, and to be ethical - the latter apparently not true of the CRU.
I like the part of scientists not documenting their program code.
Part of my work is code for programmable logic controllers used in industrial applications and safety shutdown systems. My interpretation of some paragraphs of 29USC1911 is that I am required BY LAW to document my programs.
