The article was saying ...

If there is one thing that the case of the hacked climate-change e-mails proves, it is that scientists are human. And humans do stupid things. Because no matter what the context or motivation, some e-mails should never be written:

Okay, "they are human"... and I know humans are also liars... I put two and two together, and guess what I know... :-)

See the video documentary and find out...

It’s one thing to gripe and complain about these things and disagree with it, but it’s quite another to convince your friends and neighbors and relatives and coworkers...

THEREFORE..., it’s also absolutely necessary for people to know the information in the following documentary. If there were simply one video that you could see and/or show people you know... this would be the one...

The following is an excellent video documentary on the so-called “Global Warming” I would recommend it to all FReepers. It’s a very well-made documentary.

“The Great Global Warming Swindle”

If you want to download it, via a BitTorrent site (using a BitTorrent client), you can get it at the following link. Information about BitTorrent protocol and BitTorrent clients and their comparison at these three links (in this sentence). Some additional BitTorrent information here and here.

Download it here...
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3635222/The_Great_Global_Warming_Swindle
[This is a high-quality copy, of about a gigabyte in size. This link is the information about it, and you have to click the download link to get it on your BitTorrent client software. You'll also find users' comments here, too.]

It’s worth seeing and having for relatives, friends, neighbors and coworkers to see.

Also, see it online here...
http://www.moviesfoundonline.com/great_global_warming_swindle.php
[this one is considerably lower quality, is a flash video and viewable online, of course..., and also, you can download flash video on a website either yourself or some software doing it.]

Buy it on DVD here...
[this would be the very highest quality version, on a DVD disk, of several gigabytes in size...] At Amazon, it seems to be high-priced now and have only a few copies right now.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WLUXZE

At WAGtv (a UK shop), but don't know about shipping. The price is reasonable, though.

[And..., some information from WAGtv about this item.]

However, the author completely missed the point.

From the perspective of the climate scientists involved, it seems clear that they did not trust McIntyre, did not feel that his FOI requests were legitimate scientific inquiry, and were determined to do whatever possible to resist him.

Does that exculpate them? Absolutely not. Does it explain why Phil Jones thought that private e-mails from climate researchers discussing the Fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC should be deleted? Nope, not at all. Does it demonstrate that scientific progress, despite supposedly being based on the accumulation of data and the testing of theories, can be a messy, messy business, full of personal intrigue and antipathies? Absolutely yes.

How about a simpler explanation? They have been committing a massive fraud for years and need to cover it up.

The way it works is -- one thread on Anthropogenic Global Warming = one post on that thread about this video...

Well, no, I had not thought about that. But, I guess (now that you mention it) -- it would work... :-)

BUT, really -- I had only one thought in the matter, for every one thread on "Anthropogenic Global Warming" I would get this one post out -- so that everyone on Free Republic, if they only looked at just one global warming thread, they would see this particular video.

And what I'm saying is true -- if there is only one video to see, this is the one for all your friends, relatives, coworkers and so on. This is it. So, there was really nothing more sinister than what I just said.. :-) really...

How about a simpler explanation? They have been committing a massive fraud for years and need to cover it up.

I would suggest that many of the people involved in the academic side of AGW are not lying, but rather delusional. They have become sufficiently invested in their theories that they simply cannot conceive of them being false. They have completely lost sight of what is perhaps the most fundamental scientific principle: when theory and reality disagree, no matter how much one might like one's theory, reality is correct.

Rather than trying to cast all the participants in this debacle as demons, it may be more helpful to educate the public about a couple of general scientific principles:

  1. The best way to support a scientific theory is to make a real effort to find weaknesses, but be unable to do so. (Note that this is also the proper way to demonstrate security). Real scientists should welcome such efforts; scientists who don't welcome such efforts will often find it hard to avoid regarding their theories as superior to reality.
  2. It is possible for many scientists to share a common blindness to reality; self-selected "peer review" systems are not an effective defense against such failings.
Many liberals are going to find it hard to accept that anthropogenic global warming is an imaginary phenomenon; they would find it easier to believe that the scientists who confirm the authenticity of their emails are only doing so because someone's threatening to harm their families. What may be best is to try to convince people that the researchers were overzealous in their conclusions, and that the data needs to be analyzed more carefully and objectively before we commit to any expensive policy changes. Even someone who's thoroughly infested with Liberal Mind Fog will usually be amenable to the idea of things needing further study.

Addendum: I suspect many of the academic AGW proponents have been willing to authenticate their emails because they believe that AGW is real and that people will recognize that there's not really anything wrong with exaggerating things a little to help motivate the public. Regrettably, I'm not sure they're entirely wrong.

I can go along with that to a point - however, you have to put this in the context of Hansen saying the AGW alarmists need to be overhyping the threat to get attention and that AGW is a means to implement wealth redistribution. And Heidi Cullen demanding the AMS kick out AGW skeptics. This goes beyond being true believers who become over-zealous. AGW is about vastly more than climate change - it is meant as a neo-Stalinist vector to implement parts of the liberal agenda, complete with purges and witch-hunts. I don’t think we show any kind of understanding here. Instead, we need to kick these bastards in the teeth again and again with this story, and then start kicking them in the ribs when all their teeth are gone. The AGW crowd is not going to back down just because of this, the AP just ran a story yesterday that the effects of global warming are even worse than anticipated. We need to completely wreck any credibility they might have once had, and they just gave us the hammer to hit them with. Our very economy depends upon it.

Can you justify what appears (to this layman) to be conspiracy to commit wire fraud and tax evasion with "global warming" grant money?

Return to the index page | Later Emails From: "Tatiana M. Dedkova" To: K.Briffa@xxxxxxxxx.xxx Subject: schijatov Date: Thu, 7 Mar 96 09:41:07 +0500 Dear Keith, March 6, 1996 I and Eugene received your E-mail of 04.03.1996. This day I talked over the telephone with Eugene and he asked me to send an answer from both of us. Thank you for the information concerning proposals to the INCO/COPERNICUS. We agree with your strategy used and we hope that this proposal will not be rejected. The results of INTAS-RFBR proposal will be known at the beginning of May. We know that they received many proposals and a competition is high (only 1 in 10 proposals might get money). Of course, you included in as a participant. Fritz is a coordinator from the INTAS countries. This year our laboratory received two small grants (approximately 8,000-10,000 USD per year) from the Russian Foundation of Basic Researches (RFBR) for the next three years: the first one for developing the Yamal supra-long chronology and the second one for developing tree-ring chronologies from living trees growing at the polar timberline in Siberia (together with Vaganov's laboratory). These money are very important for us as they will allow to maintain the staff of our laboratories. I and Valery Mazepa were in Krasnoyarsk during one month and together with E.Vaganov wrote the manuscript of book "Dendroclimatic Studies in the Ural-Siberian Subarctic". The problem now is to find money for its publication. If we find enough money soon (20 million roubles), the book will be published this autumn. We analysed 61 mean ring-width and 6 cell chronologies which we intend to publish in form of tables in the Appendix. We can send to you all raw measurements which were used for developing these chronologies. Of course, we are in need of additional money, especially for collecting wood samples at high latitudes and in remote regions. The cost of field works in these areas is increased many times during the last some years. That is why it is important for us to get money from additional sources, in particular from the ADVANCE and INTAS ones. Also, it is important for us if you can transfer the ADVANCE money on the personal accounts which we gave you earlier and the sum for one occasion transfer (for example, during one day) will not be more than 10,000 USD. Only in this case we can avoid big taxes and use money for our work as much as possible. Please, inform us what kind of documents and financial reports we must represent you and your administration for these money. I and Eugene have a possibility to participate in the Cambridge meeteng in July, but we need extra many and special invitations. If you do not have enough money to invite both of us, Eugene does not insist upon this visit. The best wishes to you and Phil. Yours sincerely Stepan Shiyatov

Defend *that*.

There are some people who have been pushing AGW for personal political ends. I suspect most of the academics involved with fudging the numbers, however, truly believe that if they can fudge the numbers so that AGW is real, it will be because AGW exists. It does little good to lump such people with the evil socialists for whom the destruction of civilization isn't just an unfortunate side effect of "saving the planet"--it's the real goal.

Back in my former liberal days, I probably could. "Well, yeah, they may have fudged the accounting paperwork a little, but only to prevent the U.S. government from gobbling up their grant money and giving it to the military or something. Which is more important--saving the planet or buying yet another bomber?" It's very important to recognize that many people in this country are infected with Liberal Mind Fog Disorder. Even if shown video of Al Gore talking with his associates about what suckers the American people have been, and even if they were somehow convinced that it really was Al Gore, and he really did say the things on the video, they would find it easier to believe that evil conservatives used mind-control probes to make him say the things on the video, than to believe he actually meant them.

The people you are talking about above will wait and see which way the wind ends up blowing - a lot of them also went along with AGW because not to do so meant no federal grants and no tenure. They will lurk in the wings to see who emerges on top here. This battle is at the Hansens and Cullens who seek to intimidate the rank and file. The only way to discredit the ringleaders is to call them what they are - liars, cheats and charlatans. And prove it with their own emails.

Senator Inhofe should investigate to see if Dr. Keith Briffa received any U.S. funds for his research.

Since Dr. Briffa is at the center of this money laundering, I looked for more info on him and found this bio:

http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/people/briffa/

Also, it looks like the Ekaterinburg Branch of Bank for Foreign Trade was used in the money laundering:

At the end of the last year Janet asked me to send the account of the bank to transfer the rest money of the INTAS project (737 Euros). I have sent you the necessary form to transfer the money for my name, but the Ekaterinburg Branch of Bank for Foreing Trade did not receive the money until now. Do you know the reason?
