The Modern Survival Manual: Surviving the Economic Collapse
By coincidence, I am reading this book right now. It's the best and most practical survival book I've read yet. It provides lessons for living through a "grid up" economic and social collapse, like that experienced in Argentina in 2001-2002. It's not about surviving a TEOTWAWKI grid-down post-apocalypse situation, living in a hidden fortress in the mountains, while fighting off radioactive cannibal zombie bikers.
It's aimed more toward a situation I think is at least 50-50 likely to occur in the USA. Highly recommended!!!

I just finished reading FerFal’s book. It’s worth it’s weight in gold. I consider it a view into our immediate future: a grid-up economic collapse, where the govt is corrupt, inefficient and ruthless....but it’s still there.
Meaning, they won’t be able to protect you from bands of armed home invaders. BUT, if you shoot a robber, they will still eventually arrive, and may charge you with homicide.

they will still eventually arrive, and may charge you with homicide. That assumes they're still able to do it.

My Wife has been reading/quoting from this guy's blog for a couple of years now.
We've been following a lot of his advice.
He mentions in his blog about the one thing he missed having during their meltdown...a portable generator.
We now have a propane powered one.

Those little Gennies could be worth their weight in gold. I couldn't scare up a propane one, but I did pick up a 3500 watt Coleman when one of the Big Box hardware stores went belly up a few years back. IIRC I paid about $250 or so for it.
Gasoline may be a problem, but I keep 30 gallons or so treated with Sta-Bil in the shed and rotate it through the year so it's as fresh as possible. I haven't noticed any trouble with the stuff I've stored almost a year.
Staples, staples, staples and FIFO. Flour, rice, beans, yeast, sugar, and cooking oil....
You know the drill.

We have been looking at generators and trying to figure out a good one to buy. We live out in the country and have propane heat and thought about that kind of generator. Do you like it?

Yep, we know that drill.
Propane ones are harder to find (the large full house ones use propane or CNG) but, propane doesn’t go bad and has fewer emmissions.

We’ve only started it a couple of time but, it seems to work fine.
You can get a kit (or buy one that uses multiple fuels) that allows you to use propane in a gas powered unit.
We used this company:
