President Barack Obama declared the fast-spreading swine flu a national emergency Friday night, a move that authorizes federal officials to waive some requirements in dealing with the virus, such as letting hospitals set up separate facilities to keep patients with the virus from infecting others.
The White House announced Saturday that Obama had signed the proclamation, saying it will make it easier for healthcare providers to handle a surge in H1N1 patients" if necessary.
In a letter sent to Congress reporting the move, Obama wrote, the rapid increase in illness across the Nation may overburden health care resources and that the temporary waiver of certain standard Federal requirements may be warranted in order to enable U.S. health care facilities to implement emergency operations plans."
Since April, over 1,000 people have died and 20,000 people have been hospitalized by the virus. Thousands more have gotten sick from the flu with the onset of fall, resulting in mass absences from school and work across the country.
CDC officials estimated this week that 1 in 5 children had symptoms of H1N1.

If its Sunday, expect to find Obama golfing at Fort Belvoir. This week, though, his foursome includes Melody Barnes, President Obamas chief domestic policy advisor -- and the first woman whos played golf with Obama during his 24 trips to the links since taking office.
Barnes, wearing a baseball cap, dark long sleeve shirt and beige pants, joined Obama the same day that the New York Times is running a front page story, Mans World at White House? No Harm, No Foul, Aides Say, the latest in a round of similarly stories triggered by a high-profile, all-male basketball game the president played in earlier this month.
Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton initially told pool reporter Lynn Sweet it was not true that Barnes was the first woman to golf with Obama, but when the Chicago Sun-Times reporter emailed back to ask who the others were, Burton replied:
I was wrong about this - all apologies. He golfed with women on the campaign trail but not until Melody this year. Sorry to all the people who were unwittingly misled by what I gave the pooler. (4:19 p.m.)

~~Isn’t it neat? -44 can golf when we have
military commanders and brave troops who’ve
been patiently awaiting his word on support
and reinforcements for months, as they suffer
and die .. and we’re in the middle of a national
emergency.
There’s got to be Karma ..
“CDC officials estimated this week that 1 in 5 children had symptoms of H1N1.”

Emergency emergency everyone to get from streets!!!
The Gov't we have reflects the people..
Could be many of the people are corrupt.. maybe most..
else; they would rise up.. and revolt.. unless they are generally cowards..
Could be all the courageous ones are out of the country, fighting specters..
If so; that plan was brilliant..
There’s something big about to go down. Not sure what it is, but things just don’t feel right. Does anyone else have this feeling or am I just being paranoid?
Chairman 0bama’s declaration of a “National Emergency” gives me an uneasy feeling in the pit of my gut.
“Swine flu a national emergency”
Well National, sure. But emergency, not. Just O, being PotUS, as should be.
Real stuff is, well real. Chicken Little I fear, is the friend of our enemy.

How long until Obama tries to restart Bush’s Total Information Awareness office? I know it didn’t completely die - the money was moved around the the names of the organizations and titles changed, but I can just see Obama trying to fulfill Bush’s legacy of wanting to know everything possible about everybody.
Lets face it, the US Constitution never allows the government to violate the Constitution in the name of emergency.
No kidding? What happened to going to church? Mr. Christian?
