Hmmm, I just looked up the Adept series and I don’t think that is it. In this book, the main character just would make up poems and magic would happen.

I seem to vaguely remember that premise ...you're right, it's probably not The Adept Series. I thought for a minute that it might be The Mathematics of Magic by L. Sprague DeCamp, but that doesn't seem to be right either.

Oh, well --- the memory is always the second thing to go.
