RASMUSSEN REPORTS ^ | 20 OCTOBER 2009 | RASMUSSEN REPORTS

In New Jersey, this year's governor’s race may come down to turnout and how much support an independent candidate can hold onto.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in New Jersey shows Republican challenger Chris Christie with 41% of the vote, incumbent Democratic Governor Jon Corzine at 39% and independent candidate Chris Daggett with 11%.

Compared to a week ago, that’s a four-point drop for Christie, a two-point decline for the governor and a two-point gain for Daggett. The number of undecided voters is up three points as well.

I thought Daggett was supposed to siphon off votes from Corzine.

GOP canditate “tanking” in NJ? What else is new. Like Charley Brown and the football, the GOP always sees victory until reality sets in. This is NJ. The Dems in Essex and Hudson counties will manufacture the votes to win. Voter fraud is rampant.

Yep..just like Ross Perot did it to GHB the Indie will throw it to Corzine unless the voters change it. Not too likely in blue NJ.

Well, he’s still got the lead and 39% is absolutely hideous for Corzine.

An incumbent polling at 39% would be disastrous for their chances, but the 3rd party candidate is playing spoiler. I wonder how much Corzine is paying them, because that’s the ONLY way Corzine will stand a chance in hell of winning. In NJ, the dems will ALWAYS find a way to win.

If it weren’t for the 3rd party candidate, the dems would just go to the NJ supreme court to make Corzine the only name on the ballot or something.

NJ notoriously goes back to the Dems at election time, but I have to imagine all the intensity is on the right this year.

A Third Party candidate is always a Democrat’s best friend
The stupid fools voting third party are handing it to Corzine.

If this race for governor is supposed to be a snapshot of what things may be like in 2010, I’m starting to wonder if the democratic strategy of extremism isn’t intended just to get as much passed as possible before they lose control, but rather to energize their opposition into forming a viable third party that will ensure democrats indefinite victory for decades.

You independents better start waking up... Your getting played.

“tanking?”

I agree tanking is very misleading. However this is New Jersey.

From Wiki, this guy looks like a Republican running as an Independent, so I'd suppose he's taking away votes from Christie.

Daggett worked in Reagan's EPA, did fundraising for various Republican candidates, including George H. W. Bush.

The Star-Ledger is endorsing Daggett. I can only presume that they are trying to split the Republican vote.

Makes one wonder if the Obamabots are funding Daggett so Corzine can win a messy 3 way contest.
