What, “yeah, I did it but it was secret?” is that what he’s saying? Public defamation requires public apology, and an abject one at that.

He also went on to claim that Limbaugh’s comments about McNabb were mild but that there are a thousand other comments Rush has made about blacks that are much more offensive. Of course he can’t chronicle any of them and says that conveniently enough he stopped listening to Limbaugh years ago so that he is unable to recall the specifics. My guess is he associates making fun of Sharpton or Jackson as being equivalent of making fun of blacks in general. Never mind Rush does the same thing with Clinton and....whoops, wait, forgot that he was the first black president! But seriously, Rush goes after liberals equally regardless of color. Shouldn’t that be applauded? Unless of course you’re a liberal. And we all that’s what this is about: liberals flexing their muscle through the use of the liberal media (dominant in both politics and sports) and the ever reliable race card.

It is indeed fortunate that there is a substantial black conservative voice that is growing in this country because people like Mr. Wilbon and the large percentage of the black community to whom he atributes a dislike of Rush (if it indeed exists) are certainly contributing to an unfortunate stereotype of stupidity and an inability to think logically but instead, of being capable of logical thought, of being easily “played” as “Bo Snerdly” the “official commentator” for the Limbaugh staff put it the other day.

Howie the coward is wrong too. Rush didn’t withdraw from the bid he was forced out because Rush told them he refused to withdraw.

Someone (not me) should do a study of high profile apologies in modern times.

The dimensions of analysis should be:

1. The degree of lack of facts to substantiate the original claim.

2. The assessment of the political leaning of the person who made the original claim.

3. The critical political issue being discussed at the time.

4. The timing of the apology relative to the critical issue being discussed at the time.

5. The completeness of the apology made.

6. The reaction to the apology made.

I suspect that the following results of such study would be found:

1. Ideology drove the accuser to embellish the facts in the claim.

2. The accuser was from the Left, if not far Left.

3. It doesn't matter the issue being discussed, the person will naturally make the most extreme claim possible.

4. The apology will take 1-2 days of public reaction to be forthcoming. The accuser will wait to see how it plays out before deciding whether to apologize or wait it out. The issue itself is irrelevant; it just takes time for the public to absorb what it is hearing.

5a. The apology will not be directed to the person who is accused, it will be directed to those following the story. This is why the apology will contain phrases like "...to those who may have been offended..." instead of apologizing directly to the person who was accused.

5b. The apology may not actually apologize for the actual error. This is why the apology will contain phrases like " we could not confirm..." or "we were not able to verify..." instead of saying "... it did not happen..." or "... was never said..."

6.The reaction will not be reported, because the offender controls the reporting. Any reaction will be reported as partisan attacks, or as claims for legal action against the original accusers.
