Running Scared: OU refuses to open up playbook in loss to Miami
The Woodward Report ^ | october 5, 2009 | Brian Woodward

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Sooners have found themselves in a position they have not been since 2005: playing with a first season qb as well as aqcuiring 2 losses prior to conference play. That being said, it could have been easily avoided. Offensive Coordinator Kevin Wilson refuses to take chances offensively when the game is close. To some degree one can understand the hesitancy to run certain packages and plays with an inexperienced qb and the two top receiving threats absent, but that strategy should shift when playing from behind. As time becomes scarcer the degree of risk should be increased in regard to the plays called. With risk comes the opportunity for reward.   That being said let us look at the final offensive drive and where it went wrong. After advancing the ball to within twenty yards of the goal line, and relying heavily upon Demarco Murray to get it there, Running Backs Coach Cale Gundy ushered Chris Brown onto the field to replace Murray. 1st and 10 from near the 20 and the Sooners hand the ball off to Brown who is stopped for no gain. Next down: same play, same result. Never mind that on first down a play action pass would have most likely produced an open receiver, and with a good pitch and catch a touchdown quite possibly would have been scored. But to run the same running play two times in a row with the 2nd team running back is absurd. Finish it up with a play far too risky to call unless you have to, a swing pass to Demarco Murray and OU had killed their momentum as well as their chance to gain the lead. Stevens kicked a meaningless field goal, and OU's offense would never touch the ball again...
