David Hughes UK - Telegraph
The juxtaposition on our front page this morning is striking. We carry a photograph of Acting Sgt Michael Lockett - who was killed in Helmand on Monday - receiving the Military Cross from the Queen in June, 2008. He was the 217thBritish soldier to die in the Afghan conflict. Alongside the picture, we read that the Prime Minister was forced to dash through the kitchens of the UN in New York to secure a few minutes face time with President Obama after five requests for a sit-down meeting were rejected by the White House.
What are we to make of this? This country has proved, through the bravery of men like Acting Sgt Lockett, Americas staunchest ally in Afghanistan. In return, the American President treats the British Prime Minister with casual contempt. The Presidents graceless behaviour is unforgivable. As most members of the Cabinet would confirm, its not a barrel of laughs having to sit down for a chat with Gordon Brown. But thats not the point. Mr Obama owes this country a great deal for its unflinching commitment to the American-led war in Afghanistan but seems incapable of acknowledging the fact. You might have thought that after the shambles of Mr Browns first visit to the Obama White House - when there was no joint press conference and the Presidents gift to the Prime Minister was a boxed DVD set - that lessons would have been learned. Apparently not. Admittedly, part of the problem was Downing Streets over-anxiety to secure a face-to-face meeting for domestic political purposes but the White House should still have been more obliging. Mr Obamas churlishness is fresh evidence that the US/UK special relationship is a one-way street.
Face Fwd Comments:
David Hughes is the Daily Telegraph's chief writer and his voice is the same voice that is being heard around the world from our former allies. With the Brits it started when Obama sent the bust of Winston Churchill back to England, then the boxed set of videos as a gift to the prime minister. But wait, that was a minor slap in the face.
To the Polish governments he decided to not follow through on the promised defense shield. Okay, not too bad. From time to time governments change their minds and this could have been a minor issue had Mr. Obama decided to include the governments he is slapping around in the decision. He shelved a project to install interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar site in the Czech Republic and said he would instead seek a system involving first sea-based and later land-based interceptors.
The key concern for NATO member Poland has been not so much the kind of missile system deployed as the implicit U.S. commitment to its defense implied by the stationing of American military hardware on its soil. He chose not to talk to them about it first, rather do it and then have Hilary call to explain. Hilary's call was not returned.
Mr. President, America is not arrogant, you are. Oh and to you tax payers, to make up for his arrogance, he has offered them additional aid. More money from you to cover for him.
I am sick to death of your God complex. I am sick to death of your, "I am smarter than you", attiude (by the way your not). I am sick to death, along with our friends and Allies, of you tearing down this country and " caption="Forgive me OBAMA for I have sinned"]

our relationships and throwing away everything we have built in order to bring about your social agenda. By the way, an agenda that is being rejected by the majority of the real americans, the tax payers.
Finally, for me, the icing on the cake, was this week when our favorite dictator and humanitarian, Fidel Castro had the following about him on the BBC.
The former Cuban President Fidel Castro has praised US President Barack Obama's speech before the UN General Assembly for its words on climate change.
Mr Castro described President Obama's admission that the US had been too slow to act on climate change as a brave gesture. But he added that the American capitalist system was incompatible with a clean planet.
Don't worry Mr. Castro. Our God like President is driving us as fast as he can from capitalism.
“...American capitalist system was incompatible with a clean planet.”
.
It was American capitalism that saved Europe’s ass twice in the 20th century. Now the world wants us to become a “team player” so that we can be as mediocre like the rest.
In these and many other shots, that arrogant, surely sneer makes him look like a black Mussolini.
Contrast this with Ronald Reagan’s winning smiles and determined looks.
There can be no other description for how Obama is behaving towards Brown. And the appropriate response would be to return it in kind.
He isn’t interested in being friendly with our allies, he is interested in appeasing our enemies. It is my opinion that his actions are only making him more enemies.
Thats unfair. The Europeans have a captitalist system too (rather more capitalist in the 1940’s too). This is a quote from Castro, not the Europeans.
There are some who think the release of that Lockerbie bomber was a shot in that direction.
Rots of ruck Hussein.
I can see Obama being that petty, but not Brown. So I doubt there's a connection between the two.
As theories go, I think its a bit tenuous myself
