Last Sunday SecDef Robert Gates wrote an Op-Ed in the NY Times that was not only deceptive, but avoided the main point. What he missed telling us is the European Missile Shield (Ground based Mid-course Defense - GMD) is primarily a system to defend the US from ICBMs, with a secondary capability to defend the northern and central portions of Europe. By killing it he has killed our ability to stop US bound missiles from Iran.
Early in his article Gates makes a statement that is totally misleading. In it he claims the original system would not be ready until 2015. Thats simply not true.

Oh but we don’t want to kill MIddle East launched missiles at liftoff-they might only be aiming at Israel, not us
If they are aimed at us, we want to wait until they are incoming and lawyers have been properly consulted about obama’s options under international law

There are no Iranian missiles capable of reaching the U.S. and unlikely ever to be any.
In 15 years when the marjority of Europe is Islamic in core beliefs, and they want to do Jihad.....
But there are US military bases in Germany.
And having a missile base in a sea of Islamic Europe will help us how?
There are also U.S. military bases in Iraq, in Korea, in Japan, in Bahrain, and in Turkey. Why aren't we building a missile shield around them? Iran can already hit some of those with the missiles they already have.
“There are no North Korea missiles capable of reaching the U.S. and unlikely ever to be any.”
smart analysts, 1980
anything the North Koreans can do, the Irananians can do
Maybe even from North Korea
Now, they are working on a “strategic relationship” with president-for-life Hugo Chavez
If Iran did launch a satellite into orbit, and I don't think that was confirmed, it would only require a missile with a range of 4000 kilometers or so. Less than half the distance between Tehran and New York.
Nobody seems to get it. We have sea based anti-missile systems that are fully capable of defending the U.S. and Europe against any missile attack from either the middle east or North Korea. (and thats before we even drag out the “real” goodies they don’t want to acknowledge we have)
The ONLY reason to place land based missile systems in Eastern Europe was to satisfy those who long for the old “cold war” days. They knew it would be like throwing a rock at a nest of hornets..the Russians being the hornets.
Anyway who would have thought that in the 21st century we would be worried about defending ourselves against a bunch of idiots who want to live in the stone age instead of exploring space.
Frankly, I think you are wrong. Hopefully the first missile takes you out. But not to worry, unlike you I will seek revenge on the entire genotype on your behalf.
And has anyone seen a successful test of a North Korean missile that is capable? Regardless, the U.S. has a missile defense against the North Korean missiles, on the off chance that they do reach the U.S. The missile defense in Europe is to defend Europe, period. There is no threat against the U.S. that it deals with. And since it defends only Europe, and since Poland and the Czech Republic are allowing us to install it only after agreeing to give them billions in military aid for the honor of paying billions more to defend them, I say that if they want to defend against missiles then pay for it themselves. We'll sell them the hardware and they can put it where they want.
There are any number of analysis out there that examine the Iranian missile program in detail. Google is your friend.

Frankly, I couldn't care less. But what the heck, why not let us all in on what you base your claim on? Where did you get your scoop on how the Iranians have a 10,000 kilometer plus range on their missiles? Did the Grand Ayatollah confide in you or something? Or was it the KGB? How about Mossad? Yeah, it's gitta be Mossad...
It is foolish to imagine them to be helpless.
It was a thought. However, flashing weakness of any kind does not bring about good things. Especially as public as this was.
They can’t find squirrels with enough stamina to get her from there.
Didn’t he also discontinue funding for the airborne laser that was on the edge of being operational and showing real prospects of being a truly early killer of missiles?
What bothers me about Gates...he suggested the missle shield for these countries. Now he’s acting like a nobama man.
