According to the National Weather Service, over 20 inches of rain has fallen on the Metro Atlanta area since Friday, and the subsequent flooding has closed schools and highways. Douglas County, GA, has declared a state of emergency, and people throughout the area are nervously watching the next line of storms heading east from Alabama. Through it all, some of the residents are comforted by their faith in the federal government.
As emergency workers, work details, and homeowners begin to try to clean up damage or prepare for the next round of storms, local radio shows have been highlighting the negatives of this weather event.
On the Mark Arum Show on 750 WSB, residents affected by the flooding were encouraged to call in and describe the tragedy. Governor Sonny Purdue has already flown over the flooded areas, but state funds are reportedly not going to be enough to deal with the emergency. Some callers questioned whether the federal government would be capable of swooping in to make it all better. Host Arum did not argue with those who called in to complain that the federal government wasnt prepared to deal with such an emergency.
Then, like a tiny glimmer of sunshine, a woman phoned in to call such depression into question. Why should we wait for the federal government to save us? she asked, stating that individuals need to take responsibility for themselves. Its not the federal governments responsibility to be prepared for natural disasters such as this flood, she said. Instead, people need to prepare themselves, particularly those who live in flood plains.
Typically, Arum cut the caller off before she could complete her thoughts, labeling her as one of those individual responsibility people, and advised her to call conservative talk show host Neal Boortz...

What happened to the drought?
Enough water in Lake Lanier yet?
It used to be every time we got a good rain and people would start to feel we were out of the drought, the news programs would trot out some environmental rep who would say, “Not so fast...”
We haven’t heard from the environmental reps for some time now... :)
My first experience with a flood was in Stamford, CT in 2007 when the usually 8”-deep Rippowam River overflowed to about 8ft deep. It was incredible walking around, checking out homes along the banks and the water level was about 35-40ft wide.
LOL. They don't want to hear from 'ANTS' on that program, just 'GRASHOPPERS.'
Mark Arum likes to think of himself as The John Stewart of Atlanta Radio, oh so witty! He’s just another little hatchet faced punk vomiting up the left’s talking points in ragged cloak of objectivity.
One more long cold winter (to follow this cool summer) and the Gore-ites are going to be stammering to come up with a new way to blame carbon dioxide for the world’s ills.
Yeah!
Let our water go to flow to Alabama and Florida like nature intended.
I was just thinking that you it was about a year ago or so that Sonny Perdue and some others gathered and prayed for rain in light of the drought in Georgia. Can we call this answered prayer.
I could not have said that any better myself... and here I thought I was the only one who felt that way about this guy. Thank you, Free Republic :D
I just cancelled my decades long subscription to National Geographic because (as I told them) all their writers promote the idea that there is global warming caused by humans.
They're free to do that, it's just that I'm not going to pay for it.
Are you one of those “individual reponsibility” people?
Dibs on the tagline
I am sure the people of Georgia are very impressed.
Drought? That’s so last year - went along with the claims of Global Warming...
I got 23 inches of rain with Tropical Storm Fay last year.
I think it rained for almost 5 days straight.
Give me a Hurricane to blow through instead.
You’ve got it ;)
