In a related question, does anyone know how to convince your wife that the virus on the computer has nothing to do with looking at pornography?

I use a free program called malwarebytes. You can download it for free from malwarebytes.com. After you download it make sure you run the updates to pick up any new spie definitions. Boot your computer up in safe mode with networking and run the complete scan. This software has gotten rid of some pretty nasty spieware on 3 of my PC’s. Let me know if this helps.

Get a program called Malwarebytes from Download.com (free). It is the best at removing Green AV.

First of all, I am the wife. Secondly, my neighbor asked me the exact same thing. I’m just a plain looking wife, mother, and grandmother. But, of course, it’s us quiet ones you have to watch!

1. Malwarebytes
2. Kaspersky
3. Spybot Search & Destroy
Anything by Symantec and McAfee sucks.

Do you know if this will load if I have McAfee’s suite installed? I know some programs will not load if another anti-spyware/virus program is loaded.

I don’t know. I would think it would load. I loaded it when I had another spyware progam loaded.

Two others to try, both free:
Malwarebytes Antimalware:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
And the free version of Spyware Doctor, via the Google Pack:
http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html
Both of these are excellent, and I would run them both to clean your system. However, Spyware Doctor takes a lot of memory, so I suggest uninstalling it after you’ve updated and used it.
As for antivirus, I use the free Avira, which has the best proactive cleaning of virtually any antivirus:

Antivirus comparisons:

P.S. - Spybot does a decent job and is worth a look. I’ve never been impressed with Ad-aware, though. No one program can find or prevent all problems, so you have to layer your protection. FYI, Spybot has an item called “TeaTimer” that, if installed, puts quite a load on your portable. Just install the IE Helper and Spybot itself, then update and scan.
