Obama is trying to play good cop/bad cop.
The media gets to play the race card to see if the charges stick against conservatives. Then Obama can act Presidential by standing above it all. Everything Obama is calculated.
I have been making that point, by disowning it he pulls the sister soldier card to white independents. Pure politics. My other point was Carter was a disaster for Obama anyway because he was so far over the top attacking those same independents.
In some ways the progressives are much like some conservatives here. They at MSNBC and Air America are claiming public plan is popular and all Obama has to do is please the lib base to win the next two elections (do they really believe this???) . I had one conservative tell me that GWB didnt win any 2004 net votes with his social spending. That's because talk radio told him that Bush could have won 2004 with no handouts(do they really believe this???) I call this WISHFUL base thinking. The political reality of keeping the white house is much more difficult than just pleasing the base, something to consider before we win it again.
