Before WWII, there was no with holding for taxes. You paid your taxes in one large lump sum on April 15th.
People were VERY aware on how much they were paying on how much the government took in taxes.
Now, like sheep, were are happy about our refund, not how much the government takes.
We, indeed, are brain washed ,and like sheep, we bleat and are too dumb to know where we are headed.
