Newsweek to Double Sub Price By 2011
Washington Post ^ | September 13, 2009 | Don Irvine

Newsweek execs think the way to profitablity is to increase the subscription rate by a significant amount.

From the Washington Post

Money-losing Newsweek hopes to break even by 2011 and plans to as much as double its subscription rate over the next two years, the magazine's top executive said Friday.

Ann McDaniel, managing director of Newsweek, which is owned by The Washington Post Co., said the magazine will aim for a "smaller base of very committed subscribers and get more money from each of them," while speaking at The Post Co.'s annual shareholders meeting at the company's D.C. headquarters.

And I will buy 1/2 as many Newsweek mags as I used to.

1/2 of 0 = 0.

Works for me!

Well at least they understand that this will lead to a smaller subscription base. I wonder how their advertisers feel about this.

But it’s interesting that they can’t seem to learn that jacking up marginal tax rates will lead to smaller numbers of high earners.

Whatever their marketing strategy I wish them nothing but abject failure.

I got a subscription to this hack rag as a gift a few years ago... I hadn't picked up a copy before that in probably a decade.... it was horrible.

For a news magazine you would think they would do some in depth investigating or something, but nope, just blurbs, poorly written and with even poorer research. It was basically the caliber of a small daily in magazine form.

I honestly don't see how a weekly news mag can ever survive, unless it turns itself into a deep investigative magazine that truly does hard hitting journalism. This was never Newsweek's intent though, so I wouldn't hold my breath there Newsweek.

At least the overall liberal understanding of economic issues is consistent.

Yes, I will definitely pay twice as much as I do now to read such articles as the cover story this week concerning racist babies. I love watching journalism die.

Good thinking!

They can triple the price and make it a daily and it will still cost me exactly $0.00 per year!

The fishwrap produced by its parent company hasn’t been allowed in my home since 2002, and I used to have a ComPost paper route as a lad.

If doubling their subscription price will make them profitable again, why not increase it by a factor of ten? Just think of how profitable they will be. Why not a factor of a hundred?

By George, I think we have a brilliant plan here!

I used to read Newsweek when it was a quarter an issue (yes I am old) and I stopped when it went to fifty cents. I recently picked up a copy at my doctor’s office and was surprised on how thin and light it has become. There was almost no content.

So go for it Newsweek, double the subscription price, and lose more of your base subscribers.

You sometimes wonder if they know what business they are really in. Changing the world for good is not it. Here is a hint Newsweek, you are in the eyeball business. You sell eyeballs to advertisers.

Bias content, high prices, will not get you more eyeballs.

smaller base of very committed subscribers

Why would anyone be "committed" to a silly magazine?

Newsweek to go out of business by 2013.

Why do liberals have such a hard time with the supply and demand curve? It really isn't that hard. As price goes up, supply increases, and demand DECREASES no matter how much you want it to increase.

It's like the Laffer curve: Whether you like it or not tax rates go up and tax revenue goes down. Tax rates go down and tax revenue goes up.

These idiots must have a hard time working a radio. Turn the volume knob to the right, volume goes up. Turn the knob to the left volume goes DOWN. It's pretty simple.

They lose money on every sale but make it up on volume. On second thought....

Sounds like an episode of “The Office”: “If people don’t want our product, we’ll just have to charge more”. Uh...K...
