During his speech to Congress tonight (September 9th), President Obama defended his health care plan, saying that he had never proposed providing coverage to illegal immigrants. You lie! shouted Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) prompting Obama to briefly pause in the delivery of his speech.

Well, apology or not, the cat is definitely out of the bag.
People won’t remember the apology. What is important is somebody spoke out during the speech.
I have to laugh, in Israel, where I’ve lived, Knesset members routinely shout at whoever is speaking at the podium, including the prime minister.
This was a big reason why Binyamin Netanyahu gave his policy speech in July at Bar Ilan University and not in the Knesset. He did not want his speech to be subject to outbursts from the Leftist and Arab legislators.
Go Joe!
I understand your point.
I guess the question is what would have been the perferable of the two options:
1) If he had never shouted at Obama and called him a liar.
2) Shouting and calling him a liar then apologizing for it.
Yes, I know that 3) Shouting down Obama, calling him a liar and not apologizing for it would have been best.
But if you had to choose from the first two, I choose option 2.
