The absurdity of Mr. Whitman's argument may be easily demonstrated in the sharp decline in Faith based medical charity, since the Federal Government started to intervene on a massive scale in American Medicine in the 1960s. In fact, by the time of Constantine, local Christians were the biggest competitors to the Emperor and Pagan temples, when it came to raising money for and spending money on “the poor”.= They didn’t need Caesar then and if they could get him off their back they don’t need him now.
