Al Sharpton and Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott became unlikely allies Tuesday in their call to revive immigration legislation, in speeches before the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights organization. “Congress needs to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill now,” said Scott, who heads the world’s largest retailer.
Scott attributed his views in part to his Mexican-American granddaughter, who has helped him to understand immigration as more than “simply a cerebral exercise.”
Sharpton dismissed the notion that immigrants are taking jobs from black Americans. “What jobs?” he demanded. “Blacks were doubly unemployed by whites before anyone came across the border.”
Well if Walmart doesn’t want to offer it’s employees that benefit, why is it a crime?
Those are probably mostly part time employees.
They play a semantic game. The employees that work more than 30 hours per week are considered full time, but if they are not working 40 hours per week they get not benefits.
So, they state that their employees are full time, but twist the rules to not pay benefits.
I have been to Bentonville many times. Did not business with them, but know that the company is vastly different since “Sam” is gone. Had a customer who worked for Sam as a store manager when he had 12 stores. Interesting company, but you probably would not like to work in the Corporate Offices, from what I have heard.
And they’re told to go home early if they get anywhere near 40 hours.

Well .. Unfortunately I may be able to tell you more about Wal-Mart after today.
I was laid off from a 45 thousand dollar a year job 8 months ago.
After being laid off I had put in over 200 applications/resumes and never received an answer from any of them ... until yesterday.
Guess what?
I am going to work for Wal-Mart.
They are the only ones that ever answered my application.
From 45,000 a year to 7.90 an hour.
I DON”T EVEN want to know WHAT that 7.90 an hour adds up to!!
I “DO” have Some pride left.
I feel your pain - I am in the same boat - drastic slash of income after months of looking.

Who cares? They are under no obligation to pay for their employees health care. If they mistreat their employees, then the employees can work somewhere else. That’s what a free market is for. All you free marketeers are quick to insinuate that Walmart should do something the free market clearly tells them they don’t need to do. Despite their “abuses” of their employees, they get ten apps for every job opening. So, they must be doing something right.
Now that is a really puzzling statement.
First, I did not say that they should be force to do something they chose not to do.
Second, the statement "All you free marketeers" implies that you are not a "free marketeer".
Third, I once was in a meeting where the attorney who headed Walmart's Labor Relations gave a talk about how independent businesses could compete with Walmart. (and they can and do) He was rather proud that they had no labor union. He was a nice respectable old gentleman. I liked him.
My statement is that Walmart is not a company that I would like to work for.
I had a good friend in OKC that previously worked for Walmart in Bentonville and told me about the Saturday staff meetings and how they operated. He was an IT manager.
Not for me. And they are not what their public relations department projects.
Then, don’t work for them. You’ve given the ultimate in anecdotal evidence that they are a bad company to work for, and unverifiable at that. There’s millions of Americans that work for Walmart and you come up with a handful of stories that make you think they’re a bad company to work for. No company is perfect and frankly who cares. They have no trouble hiring anyone. So, it doesn’t really matter. Given that they get ten applications for every position, I’m sure that Walmart will survive without your services.
Look I have no intention of badmouthing Walmart. Simply stated facts about them as I know them.
I admit a built in bias against how they operate, because I have spent over 35 years with 2 privately owned wholesale distribution companies. Have spent my life working with independent retailers.
Many of those retailer offer no health insurance packages for their employees. Some do. But most of them hire “full time” employees, full time as defined by 40 hours per week.
I regret beginning this discourse, intended no offense, and only gave my perspective form 35+ years servicing retailers.
