Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the General in Charge of US forces in Afghanistan is about to ask Barack Obama the same question that John Rambo asked his superior at the beginning of Rambo II "Sir,Do we get win this time?"
During the campaign President Obama defined Iraq as a "bad war" and Afghanistan the "good war," so it was no surprise when the POTUS put securing Afghanistan near the top of his agenda. What was surprising was an interview he gave where he said "victory" in the Afghanistan isn't necessarily the United States' goal.
"I'm always worried about using the word 'victory,' because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur," Obama told ABC News.
The enemy facing U.S. and Afghan forces isn't so clearly defined, he explained.
"We're not dealing with nation states at this point. We're concerned with Al Qaeda and the Taliban, Al Qaeda's allies," he said. "So when you have a non-state actor, a shadowy operation like Al Qaeda, our goal is to make sure they can't attack the United States."
So which is it Mr. President? It seem silly to urge our military heroes to fight and possibly die for to protect their country in a war that we have no intention to win.
If we do intend to win, many senior people in Congress are urging a super-sized surge in Afghanistan, to win the war, they are saying we need to more than double the size of our forces to 400,000.
And now Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the leader of the NATO forces in Afghanistan is about to ask the Commander-in-Chief for a big build up also. What will the President do, agree with the General, or further endanger the safety of the American Mainland?

Then we would just lose as the Russians did. We should just focus on pacifying Kabul and the rest of Afghanistan can go to hell anyway.
Man, this will frost the cookies of his base.
Yeah, I thought one of the reasons we had success there was because of our relatively small foot print.
I don’t uinderstand General McChrystal’s thinking, especially for a guy who once ran SFOD-D (Delta). How will bringing in more conventional forces solve the problems? In my view, he should be turning loose all of the SOF available in a no-holds-barred program aimed at wiping out Taliban forces as at the end of 2001 inconcert with Afghan indig forces.
It seems to me that to resurrect Phoenix (like the Aussie SAS apparently are doing) and use air power would be the ticket at this point. Sure, they will kill civilians, but now the Talibs know conventional forces will disengage if civvies are in the kill box. We are getting guys blown up daily, which is almost criminal given the ROE the Obama administration has forced on the military, to what end?
Are these the same terrorists that kicked out the Russians with our help?
Where in blazes are we going to get 400,000 troops for the “pointy end?”
Let’s get all of the troops out of America ASAP. Easier for us to deal with civilians when we kill everyone off with our evil vaccine...bwaaahaahah bwahahaahaha
just kidding. there’s no nefarious plot to keep our soldiers overseas while a power mad president rules the roost. this is amerikkka after all.
(I thought the war on terror was over...)
You're POTUS now, 0boytoy. You can't vote 'present' anymore.
