Gross National Misery: Brought to You by the United States Government

In the 1960s and 1970s, psychologist Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania found that animals receiving electric shocks which they had no ability to escape or prevent, were unable to take action in future distressing situations, even when avoidance or escape was possible.

Expanding his research to humans, Seligman came to the same conclusions. A human’s drive to initiate action is thwarted by a sense of a lack of control over his surroundings. Seligman labeled this phenomenon learned helplessness and found that it hinders normal development and leads to emotional disturbances, most predominantly, depression.

In other words, people are most vulnerable to depression and other emotional disorders when they perceive a lack of control over their circumstances.

It would be wise for Americans to remember Ben Franklin's words in these perilous times.

The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either.

I think it would be great to set up a “Gross National Misery” index to weigh how Americans suffer under this administration. If possible, that could be a great political tool...

One of the root causes for the rampant alcohol addiction in the former Soviet Union.

The former soviet union built the Berlin wall and closed all of it's borders for the sole reason of preventing the best and brightest from fleeing the country.

The smart, the rich, the talented, the productive, the hard working will always flee a system in which they are forced to do all the labor for slave wages while the bums live off their hard work (which is what is happening in the North East and California)

Communists always knew that communism couldn't exist in a world with a democratic capitalistic alternative. The west knew this also, and this was the whole reason for the cold war, as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars, Containment of communism which had to expand into adjoining capitalistic area or die.

The problem now is that there is NO WHERE TO GO. No where to flee to! no where where freedom exists anymore. Socialism (which is just communism, that isn't being forced upon people at the end of a barrel), has spread everywhere.

There are no more truly free countries anymore. There is no where to run to anymore... communism has won. I fear for my family, I fear that we may be rounded up and sent off for reconditioning eventually or worse. I have no hope left save for a small spark of freedom I still see at places like this or the health care town halls.
