As you wish.
I saw it a few weeks ago and found it to be very boring. I like musicals a lot, but not this one.
1776 was awesome! I saw it in high school, many years ago.
Even on FR you will take some heat from the masses on things.
You were right, though.
My husband and I just saw the DVD this week. I thoroughly BARFED at the story! Truly awful!
Every cliched politically correct ( and boringly trite) belief possible was given more than its overly tired due.
1) Brave, plucky, independent, and creative single mom does excellent job raising a perfectly wonderful daughter.
2) Dad's aren't really needed or wanted after all.
3) Older white woman has the hots for a young teen black boy.
4) Gay kiss between two of the possible dads at the end of the movie.
5) Daughter and fiance decide at the last minute to cancel the wedding ( while at the altar) and travel the world as live-together honeys. ( Marriage is completely unnecessary, you see. )
6) Simple, sincere, pure hearted, and honest peasants abound dancing in the streets living the simple life.
8) Older female friend aggressively chases one of the suspect dads.
9) Friendship between female friends is far, far, more true and lasting than any relationship with a man.
10) Sleeping around slutiness as a hippie is glorified as quaint. That a daughter is the consequence of this sluttiness is just an unfortunate “accident”.
11) Prudish grandparents rejected the slutty mom and her bastard daughter. ( In the author's eyes, the grandparents were probably hateful Christians.)
9) Oh! And..Let's not forget a tribute to the Greek godess, Aphrodite at the very end of the movie.
My husband just laughed and said, “If you’re a gay male, you’ll love the movie!”
I saw that on Maury.
That duo with Bronson near the end was truly awful. He should never try to sing.
Completely unoriginal and fully expected liberal trite tripe.
(Gee! And...The Marxists think that they are being sooooo cutting edge. )
Progressive, even. :)
How about Mel Brooks, “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”?
This was a terrible critique of the movie. The critic missed: 1) Meryl Streep played a role where she was supposed to be about age 40. She's 60 for Heavens Sake! 2) Pierce Brosnam sings -- terribly! (The Broadway and the traveling Broadway South productions were outstanding!)
You’re not a prude. You’re right.
The story line is just a vehicle for the songs - not the book for an original musical. The writers could have come up with anything, but they chose this garbage.
I wanted to see it on Broadway, until I found out what it was about.
Very nice summation. I think you hit all the points I was thinking about and added a couple of other ones I had not thought about.
Why is this news worthy
Because it is in the 'Bloggers and Personal' Forum, not the News Forum.
Well, what about “The Sound of Music” that’s pretty good match of music and plot, and a relatively true story of the Von Trapp singers.
I'm a guy and I like GOOD musicals. Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miz, Chess, lots of good stuff from the 40's and 50's and early 60's.
I am a guy and am a big fan of musicals, having seen many musicals on Broadway on their original runs. The first (so they tell me) was ‘Oklahoma!’. Also saw ‘The Music Man’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Do, Re, Mi’ and ‘Cabaret’ among others. Performed in a few amateur musicals, including ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and ‘Anything Goes!’
Nothing like seeing a good musical on Broadway, and you still can, if it is a revival.
