I stand corrected. Now Mary Todd Lincoln was probably a very tragic figure indeed. In today’s terminology she would be considered disturbed, and husband Abe had issues too... chronically depressed in today’s terminology...but he did get us thru the Civil War as a Union...was it Elenor Roosevelt that channeled? Doggone I think one of the first ladies in 20th century did.
One of the most fascinating monuments to the whole spiritualist movement is the big house in San Jose, CA built by the heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune. She apparently had all this guilt about her money being made from weapons. She went cuckoo and built this ridiculous Victorian mansion that is more like a labyrinth - it's purpose was to confuse the so-called spirits (victims of Winchester guns) that she felt were haunting her. You can tour the home, which is really quite beautiful - but obviously the result of a mind that had been completely warped by these huckster "spiritualist" opportunists.
Many of these First Ladies simply did not have enough to do.
Having "MORE PARTIES" might well have kept them busy and out of government policy making.
Leaves me torn between condemning Obama for the Wednesday Night shindigs and thinking that may be good for the country if it keeps Michelle worn out.
