Here is video of Jefferson City, Missouri citizens holding a "Video Town Hall" on August 12, 2009, outside the office of longtime Democrat Rep. Ike Skelton because Skelton has scheduled no town hall meetings to discuss issues during the August recess. Sketon's office says he does not do Town Hall Meetings.
The citizens decided that if he won't schedule meetings, they would meet anyway and voice their views on the issues, particularly on the Democrats' Government Health Care Plan. Citizens took turns speaking while a video camera recorded their views. The video is being sent to Ike Skelton.
For his part, the report says Skelton has "talked with Health Care professionals," and that if citizens want to share their views they can "call his office."
I think Rep. Skelton has been in Washington so long he has forgotten who it is he works for. He ought to be going out of his way to hear from his constituents, not telling them to "call his office" where a paid staffer will listen to the caller. Offices and staffers are needed, but they do not take the place of the Congressman himself taking time to listen personally to the heart of the people he is sworn to represent.
This is a good way of dealing with members of Congress who, like Skelton, don't seem to think it necessary to listen to citizens. People should hold a "Video Town Hall" outside the offices of every Representative or Senator with that kind of attitude to call attention to the lack of concern on the part of those who claim to represent the people. . . . excellent exposure of another teletubbie congressman.
Folks with cowardly reps should set up townhalls and put an empty suit at the podium
excellent idea
Ike hasn’t had a legitimate challenger for two decades. He doesn’t sweat the small stuff from his district.
My congressRAT (Paul Tonko) representing the Albany schenectady area in upstate NY, is holding his town hall meeting by PHONE. Tonko supports the healthcare plan but the RAT is too scared to face his constituents. Freaking COWARD. Another candidate for Tar and Feathers.
This is the Congressman the minority selected to lead the Dems against the impeachment of Bill Clinton. I think he got a boat named after him for his efforts. He is in a safe majority rural, born and bred democrat district, that get that religion in Sunday morning services. That is not to say there are no conservatives in his district but there are more on the state/federal rural dole than free thinking self productive conservatives. And I am not just referencing the welfare moms but the government subsidized farmers as well.
I thought Ike was going to retire years ago.
C’mon Missouri, do the right thing and send him to the old folks home.
that is freakin awesome. Love this country!
Ike Skelton happens to be my Congressman and this is OUTRAGEOUS! I want him to do town hall meetings because he needs to hear from WE, THE PEOPLE how we feel!
I didn’t vote for his re-election last year and I won’t vote for him next year, either.
What I don’t understand is how my district went like 61% McCain/Palin, yet re-elected DEMOCRAT Ike Skelton by an even larger margin.
We’ve got to get this guy out of office! We need a conservative, average Joe to run against him.
If I were old enough, heck, I would run against him! Unfortunately, I’m just a few years too young.
I was with Ike Skelton some years ago at the Little Big Horn battlefield. We were walking against the traffic, and he was greeting everyone we passed, looking for fellow Missourians. When he found some, he stopped to chat and I’m sure that they left feeling that he was their best friend in the whole wide world.
He wants everyone in Missouri to think that he strong on defense (he is) and that consequently he is a conservative (he isn’t). On every issue but defense, he is Nancy Pelosi’s best friend, voting with her time and time again and against the interests and wishes of his constituency. He knows that he can safely ignore his district’s opinion.
