Unlike most people, I’m actually a fan of electric cars (no tree-hugging sentiments here; to me, they’re a big middle finger at Chavez and Ahmadinejad, since we can run them on domestic coal, nuclear, etc), and even I’m sick of fake mpg numbers like that. You could come up with the figure that a plug-in hybrid Space Shuttle Crawler would get a billion miles a gallon, if you just assume that it drives a hundred billion miles on electricity for every one mile it drives on gasoline. I.e., you can get whatever number you want that way. It’s garbage.
Here is how I figure the mileage on my electric golf cart.
With a 3 amp battery charger it takes 16 hours to charge the 2 batteries from near dead to full charge. They total 55 amp hours (so 16 AH X3 = 48, close enough to dead for me)
48 amps x 120 volts =4980 watts, or call it 5kw is what I use to charge the cart. The maximum I pay per KWH is 11 cents, so it costs 55 cents to take the batteries to a full charge. And with a full charge, I can ride the golf cart 12 miles.
How much gasoline can I buy for 55 cents? At $2.20 a gallon, I can get a quarter of a gallon. So a full charge is about equal to 48 miles a gallon.
Not really much of a savings, but the cart is fun to drive....

The Volt does take us in the direction of thumbing our noses at Chavez...etc.
That and actually allowing drilling in areas like off of Florida and California....and, the Bakken or Williston Basin and just east of the Rockies with at least a combined known quantity approaching a trillion bbl’s of oil, sweet oil at that.
When obama doesn't have an energy policy other than cash-for-clunkers it might seem rather bleak.
Electric cars suck.

Yeah but the nutburger tree huggers think that their electric outlets in their garage are “magic” they don’t think that we need Atomic Energy, Coal Generators, Natural Gas etc etc let alone transmission lines, fewer regulations and exploration. Next year when the Guberment (if they wait that long) attaches the road tax to your domestic electric bill you may be singing a different song.
Jus sayin
