I really liked Dole, he had a great sense of humor and again, was critical in bring down Clinton in 93-94. McConnall does not have Dole’s sense of humor.
But he would have been like Bush 1 which after Bush 1 made him a poor choice for a candidate and a big compromiser(then again look at GWB!) .
Many FReepers may regard Dole as a RINO for being too much of a deal maker. People need to understand the circumstances that Dole grew up in. Dole is a WW 2 veteran from the FDR era. Prior to 1994, he probably thought a GOP Congress was impossible. Given this thinking, he would make deals to have the GOP some say in the legislative process. After 1994, Dole thought to himself, “Wow! I never thought it would happen in my lifetime. Now what do I do as Senate Majority Leader?”
