Depression - WHY don't politicians tell the TRUTH?!

DEPRESSION! Why don’t politicians tell the TRUTH, the WHOLE TRUTH and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH?!?!

I must report that in my visits throughout the Detroit area to get to talk with people, I hear the word, “DEPRESSION” again and again… they are NOT using the OFFICIAL TERM, “recession.” Ha! Dah! I think WE THE PEOPLE KNOW something that our government leaders do NOT know… or, perhaps, want to cover up… what do YOU think? HOPE you will comment NOW!

I am in Detroit, MI area this week teaching my regular AP US Government & Politics Seminar for Teachers. This is the seminar which I have co-instructed with Dr. David T. Canon as part of UW-Madison’s Advanced Placement Summer Institute through 13 years… NOW, David and I are looking forward to June 2010 for #14. A major handicap over here is that I do NOT have a team-mate – university faculty professor like David. At UW-Madison, based on my years of teaching AP US Government & Politics at Parker HS, Janesville, I am the AP teacher expert. While David takes the morning sessions with current Political Science research/information/perspective on the units for the course curriculum, I have the afternoon sessions to focus on the National AP Exam and classroom strategies/techniques/resources to EFFECTIVELY teach the course both to achieve the MAJOR goal of informed & involved citizens of our republic and the world AND earning college-credit on the National AP Exam. Here our focus is on the classroom.

It is a significant experience to be here in the GREAT DEPRESSION ZONE of Detroit, MI! It has made me the more aware of the REALITIES of our GREAT DEPRESSION of 2008-09… hope recovery really does come before the end of 2009… time will tell. I do NOT, however, believe that MISleading WE THE PEOPLE – voters and taxpayers – in terms of the REALITIES of the current economic DEPRESSION is productive. WHY do our politicians NOT tell us the TRUTH, the WHOLE TRUTH and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH?! I ask you – PLEASE SHARE YOUR COMMENTS NOW!

Are WE THE PEOPLE not willing or able to know the truth? Do we prefer the environment of “ignorance is bliss”? I KNOW that IF I were diagnosed with cancer, I absolutely expect and bank on my physician telling me the TRUTH, the WHOLE TRUTH and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH! (I’d fire any physician with whom I would consult the minute I became aware of a DIStortion of THE TRUTH!!!!! I want to KNOW and I want to be able to deal with and manage my REAL situation! The same attitude prevails for me vis-à-vis our ECONOMY!

I have numerous friends who are NOW unemployed. Some of my friends have gone through the hell of foreclosure on their homes! (I do NOT use the term, “house” – they are MORE than “houses,” they are HOMES! I am OUTraged at the attitudes and behaviors of many bankers on foreclosures! I believe that the banking industry at-large ought to be held MORE accountable for the BAD credit policies which took advantage of ill informed persons! Why not?!)

Using the “R” (recession) word does NOT help anything and, to my mind, undermines meaningful and needed therapy to resolve the economic situation. In truth, we are in a “D” (depression) and we need to realistically choose the therapies to resolve this economic situation. Just think: WE THE PEOPLE were told that we were NOT in a “recession” through 2008 and then in December 2008, we were told that since December 2007, we had been in an official RECESSION! Give me a break – I have read the excuses for NOT telling us, but I do NOT accept one single one of them. It was blatant political manipulation! And now, are we the victims of another round of blatant political manipulation? Will we be informed in December 2009 that from December 2008 into 2009 we were in an official DEPRESSION?!?!?! I have the audacity of hope that President Obama will truly NOT let that happen, but I confess I am not confident and I do need reassurance NOW.

This issue, “Recession vs. Depression” and the “Racial Profiling” (enkindled by the arrest of Harvard University Professor Gates – highlighted nationally with President Obama’s statement and then the “Beer 'Summit'” at The White House Thursday, 7/30) along with several other key CONTROVERSIAL issues were integral to a very lively and challenging discussion time among these high school teachers from schools throughout suburban Detroit. NOTE: Not one single person of COLOR was a participant in the seminar. Very disappointing for me. The key ideas behind the whole discussion of CONTROVERSIAL issues was based on a very valuable new book by Dr. Diana Hess of the University of Wisconsin – Madison’s School of Education. I would encourage anyone and everyone with interest in how to effectively address CONTROVERSIAL issues in our society/culture make this a high priority read. It is targeted for secondary classroom teachers, but it is applicable for everyone of us involved as informed citizen of our republic. We need to develop the awareness and sensitivities for healthy public discussion of all issues, especially CONTROVERSIAL issues. DISCUSSION is key to a healthy representative democracy/republic!

I was THRILLED to learn this week that the book has been awarded the National Council for the Social Studies its 2009 Exemplary Research in Social Studies Award. The book has so very much to offer in our present polarized political culture. For more information on this book, Controversy in the Classroom

After a family reunion with our family near Findlay, OH (Marilyn’s family homestead) this weekend, we are headed home to WI on Monday anticipating a very busy, satisfying and fulfilling month of August 2009. Here we go…

>> NO WONDER gm LEFT TOWN ?!!?!

First, get your caps lock button fixed ... on what planet would “GM” be the only non-capitalized letters in that sentence. That was like reading the rants of a meth addict, with random words and phrases capitalized throughout.

Second, a visit to Detroit is unlikely to give a reasonable estimation of the economic situation in the entire country. We cannot declare this nation in a “depression” due to Detroit alone.

Why don’t politicians tell the TRUTH

Well, for starters, most politicians are pathological liars. They are lying to advance their own self serving agenda and their twisted mind convinces them that they are telling the truth.

“EYSTER was thought a GOOD TEACHER BY the communuty! “

The community had very low standards if that is a sample of his writing.

Like the old saying goes, “If the truth would do democrats any good for their particular agendae, they would use it.”

WHY don’t politicians tell the TRUTH?!

Let the jokes begin:

1. You actually have to pledge a blood oath NOT TO tell the truth when you join.

2. They want to be re-elected.

3. Would you re-elect someone who told you how bad things are yet they can’t fix them by themselves, either?

4. When you become a politician, ‘the truth’ actually begins to smell like skunk.

5. Why tell the truth when a lie will work so much better?

6. Because you’re not telling a lie, if you believe it.

7. It’s Bush’s fault.

8. If they couldn’t lie, they’d never say anything. And these people LOVE to hear themselves talk.

9. If they didn’t lie how would we know they weren’t dead?

10. When all the politicians stop lying, that’s the last sign the end of the world is here.
