President Obama's appalling ignorance of history
Urgent Agenda ^ | 7-24-09 | William Katz

YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS, ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT - AT 9:15 A.M. ET: A number of commentators have noticed President Obama's appalling ignorance of history. The gaps were on full display during his speech in Cairo to the Muslim world, in which he did some hefty rewriting of the historical facts. He also is on record as saying they speak Austrian in Austria.

But this takes the prize. Consider - the president of the United States on the history of World War II:

President Obama has put securing Afghanistan near the top of his foreign policy agenda, but "victory" in the war-torn country isn't necessarily the United States' goal, he said Thursday in a TV interview.

"I'm always worried about using the word 'victory,' because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur," Obama told ABC News.

COMMENT: Oh dear, oh dear. Is there any reasonably educated adult in America who doesn't know the story of the end of World War II? No, Mr. President, we didn't see Emperor Hirohito "coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur." The instrument of surrender was signed on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur (temporary rank, made permanent in 1946) presided over the ceremony. The Japanese were represented by appropriate officials. The emperor didn't come down that day, and never surrendered to MacArthur. He was permitted to remain on the Chrysanthemum Throne as part of the surrender agreement.

Do you feel our national security may be in some jeopardy?

If our enemies haven't already figured Obama out, they're not bright enough that this added item would make them any more of a threat.

I’m sure Keith Olbermann will be all over this story informing us of the President’s stupidity. Oh, never mind.

Well cheer up. Obamski is in good company. Clinton once delivered a similar recollection of the surrender on the bow(pronounced "boe") of the aircraft carrier Missouri. He also thought the pilot of the Berlin Airlift who dropped candy for the children was a woman. Yeah we get such fine intellects from the Ivy League.

Again and again and again- Obama’s mouth get’s him in trouble. He needs to keep his mouth shut when his teleprompter isn’t around.

THAT nitwit has a fixation on the number of days since President Bush’s declaration of “mission accomplished”, so he probably won’t have the time/s;)

Oh give ZerO a break, he has only two jobs, read what TOTUS tells him to and sign legislation, even if, he is not legally eligible to sign it. Everything else he does gets flushed down the toilet.

He has yet to publish his National Security Policy.

I don’t think he can.

"I'm always worried about using the word 'victory,' because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur," Obama told ABC News.

Besides the little fact that Hirohito didn't sign anything, I think his point is that America has never been able to live down that deplorable act of requiring Japan to surrender after WWII.

I'd laugh, except that this guy actually lives in the White House, during a time of war.

“but ‘victory in the war-torn country isn’t necessarily the United States’ goal,’ he said Thursday in a TV interview.”

That’s because, to Obama:

Success is Failure, Victory is Defeat!

Actually I hope he keeps talking and thus driving his approval down the drain

You know, I had always understood that previous Presidents read Gladstone and Disraeli, Lincoln and Grant, Eisenhower and Churchill, Dr. King and Ghandi, Hobbes and Pepys, Rousseau and Chateaubriand .Thoreau and Locke, Plato and Goethe, Tacitus and Cincinnatus, etc. to prepare for exalted leadership.

I suspect our current President didn't even read his Silver Burdett.

No doubt Obama has seen the photos of the surrender, even if he hasn’t read anything about it.

His mistake is excusable, since they all look alike.

Truman once corrected the Latin grammar of some bishop or scholar. Coolidge translated Dante for relaxation.
