Act 1: scene July, 2009

Friends, Americans, Patriots, lend me your ears;
I come to destroy and apologize for the US, not to praise Her;
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones,
So let it be with the US ... The noble Obama
Hath told you the US was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath the US answered it ...
Here, under leave of Obama and the rest,
(For Obama is an honourable man;
So are they all; all honourable men)
Come I to speak in the US’s demise ...
She was my homeland, faithful and just to me:
But Obama says She was ambitious;
And Obama is an honourable man….
She hath brought many illegals home to America,
Whose wages did the general coffers fill:
Did this in the US seem ambitious?
When that the poor have cried, the US hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Obama says She was ambitious;
And Obama is an honourable man.
You all did see that on the Inaugural
Justice Roberts twice presented then the oath of office,
Which Obama did twice swear to: was this not ambition?
Yet Obama says She was ambitious;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Obama spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love Her once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then to mourn for Her?
O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason…. Bear with me;
My heart is in the sick bed there with the US,
And I must pause till it come back to me.

But yesterday the word of the US might
Have stood against the world; now lies She here.
And few so poor to do Her reverence.
O masters, if I were disposed to stir
Your hearts and minds to mutiny and rage,
I should do Obama wrong, and Pelosi, Reid wrong,
Who, you all know, are honourable ‘men’:
I will not do them wrong; I rather choose
To wrong the dead, to wrong myself and you,
Than I will wrong such honourable men.
But here’s a parchment with the seal of the US;
I found it in Her museum, ‘tis Her Constitution:
Let but the commoners hear this testament—
Which, pardon me, I do not mean to read—
And they would go and kiss the US’s wounds
And dip their napkins in Her sacred soil,
Yea, beg a rock of Her for memory,
And, dying, mention it within their wills,
Bequeathing it as a rich legacy
Unto their issue.

Have patience, gentle friends, I must not read it;
It is not meet you know how the US loved and showered you with freedom and liberty.
You are not wood, you are not stones, but men;
And, being men, bearing the Constitution of the US,
It will inflame you, it will make you mad:
‘Tis good you know not that you are Her heirs;
For, if you should, O, what would come of it!

Will you be patient? will you stay awhile?
I have o’ershot myself to tell you of it:
I fear I wrong the honourable men
Whose daggers have stabb’d the US; I do fear it.

You will compel me, then, to read the Constitution?
Then make a ring about the spirit and soul of the US,
And let me show you Her that was the Constitution.
Shall I descend? and will you give me leave?

If you have tears, prepare to shed them now.
You all do know this mantle: I remember
The first time ever the US put it on;
‘Twas at a convention, after Yorktown, in 1781,
That day She overcame the British:
Look, in this place ran Pelosi’s dagger through:
See what a rent the envious Reid made:
Through this the well-beloved Obama stabb’d;
And as he pluck’d his cursed steel away,
Mark how the blood of the US follow’d it,
As rushing out of doors, to be resolved
If Obama so unkindly knock’d, or no;
For Obama, as you know, is the media’s angel:
Judge, O you gods, how dearly the media loves him!
This was the most unkindest cut of all;
For when the noble US saw Congress and Obama stab,
Ingratitude, more strong than traitors’ arms,
Quite vanquish’d Her: then burst Her mighty heart;
And, in his mantle muffling up Her face,
Even at the base in Washington of of Lincoln’s statua,
Which all the while ran blood, the great US economy fell.
O, what a fall was there, my countrymen!
Then I, and you, and all of us fell down,
Whilst bloody treason flourish’d over us.
O, now you weep; and, I perceive, you feel
The dint of pity: these are gracious drops.
Kind folk, what, weep you when you but behold
Our dear US’s vesture wounded? Look you here,
Here is Herself, marr’d, as you see, with traitors.

Good friends, sweet friends, let me not stir you up
To such a sudden flood of mutiny.
They that have done this deed are honourable:
What private griefs they have, alas, I know not,
That made them do it: they are wise and honourable,
And will, no doubt, with reasons answer you.
I come not, friends, to steal away your hearts:
I am no orator, as Obama is;
But, as you know me all, a plain blunt man,
That love my friend; and that they know full well
That gave me public leave to speak of Her:
For I have neither wit, nor words, nor worth,
Action, nor utterance, nor the power of speech,
To stir men’s blood: I only speak right on;
I tell you that which you yourselves do know;
Show you the dear US’s wounds, poor poor dumb mouths,
And bid them speak for me: but were I Obama,
And Obama this American citizen, there were an American citizen
Would ruffle up your spirits and put a tongue
In every wound of the US’s soul that should move
The stones of all citizens to rise and mutiny.

Yet hear me, countrymen; yet hear me speak.

...

Why, friends, you go to do you know not what:
Wherein hath the US thus deserved your loves?
Alas, you know not: I must tell you then:
You have forgot the Consitution I told you of.

...

Here is the Constitution, and under the US’s seal.
To every American citizen She gives,
To every several man, inalienable and guaranteed Constitutional rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

...

Hear me with patience.

Moreover, She hath left you all Her roads,
Her abundant riches and new-planted orchards,
The Atlantic, the Pacific; She hath left all between to you,
And to your heirs for ever—if you can preserve Her, common pleasures,
To walk abroad, and enjoy yourselves as free men.
Here was a country! when comes such another?

“No matter who they are, they are no match for his intelligence.”

Yes, CK does have a brilliant mind and sharp, droll wit. Brit is on his level, imho (’course I think BH’s very cool and he’s also open about being a Christian).

I don’t agree with Charles on a number of issues, but if you listen to him daily, you’ll hear him put BHO down regularly, in subtle but succinct, dead-on comments.
