I'll bet his wife gave him an ultimatum to stop drinking or she'd leave him. He did it because he's good at following instructions, and then she left him anyway because she just didn't like him in the first place. He followed all the rules and thought by doing so life would be "fair." It wasn't the drinking, it was something else. Sad. Now, he's ready to surrender to the government to take care of him. Yet, there is still something in him that makes him feel he needs permission for falling short. For caving. He has no idea who he is or what he stands for in life. He's just trying to make his failings okay in his own mind. He's troubled.
