Virginia Congressman Rick Boucher (D-9th District) raised eyebrows recently when he voted in favor of the Waxman-Markey Carbon Tax bill - among coal-country Congressmen, Bouchers aye stood out like a sore thumb when the vote tally was posted. The resulting flack included an ad sponsored by American Solutions for Winning the Future (ASWF) in the Roanoke Times asking, Why did Rick Boucher vote to kill Virginia jobs? Boucher has now responded with a lengthy letter, which is reproduced below. First, the back-story.

it warms the heart to receive such a loving form letter..
Boucher is finished!
New nickname, “Boucher the doucher”
Acorn has no doubt promised him thousands of votes from the dead.
Acorn is going to be joining them.
He doesn't think that we realize that despite those targeted offsets the cost of everything we do, all energy we use, will increase to pay for all those carbon reduction efforts he mentions.
He doesn't think that the people in his district who rely on coal for their living will realize that this bill increases the cost of coal use in order to encourage the use of higher cost "green" forms of energy?
I assume he's counting on the back-ending of the damage to keep him out of serious trouble until he retires. Keep in mind that his supporters include the same United Mine Workers which endorsed Obama despite the I'll-bankrupt-the-coal-industry talk. Never underestimate the gullibility of those addicted to political favors.
Just basking in the glow and feelin’ the love!
Boucher knows that anything short of him being caught on tape murdering someone isn’t going to get him voted out of office. He’s pretty much our ‘congressman for life’. He typically wins by around 20 points, and he’s really been bringing home the pork lately.
Cap and tax is going to have a terrible effect on his district, because lots of jobs have left, and this bill will make it more difficult for the businesses and people that remain. The increase in electricity rates is also going to hit his constituents hard, because rates are already high in his district even without cap and tax.
The fact he voted for this sham cap and tax bill may convince the republicans to put someone on the ballot to oppose him in 2010. Last year he ran unopposed. His vote on this bill really could make him vulnerable, if an organized campaign would mobilize against him.
That letter is pure BS ...at least in my day elementary school kids learned that CO2 was necessary for all plant life. The SCOTUS declaring CO2 is a pollutant is no different than Church fathers in the 1400’s declaring the earth was stationary and the planets and sun move around it. I received a similar form letter from my member of Congress and though she voted against the carbon tax bill her letter was a total regurgitation of Al Gore’s crap.
no, his votes come from college students at VT and Radford, plus the large liberal wing in Blacksburg. Most of the college students are residents of Northern Virginia, but managed to vote down here last year. Goode has this same problem with UVA in 2008. The public universities keep growing no matter what in this state. VT is a huge monster of cash and jobs that is full of libs.
Also, Boucher always runs very well in the coal-producing counties (Buchanan, Dickenson, Wise, Lee) where he has union support. There’s no Acorn presence to speak of in that area. He does less well in the conservative, non-coal-producing areas, like Bland, Floyd, Grayson, Wythe, and his home county, Washington.

What is Boucher’s Obamacare schedule?
Boucher says he supports health care reform, but he voted against the current version - - “Many liberals fear that would result in higher costs to patients, and the Ways and Means and Education and Labor produced bills with public plans modeled on Medicare. The Democrats who opposed the final Energy and Commerce bill were Reps. John Barrow of Georgia; Rick Boucher of Virginia; Jim Matheson of Utah; Charlie Melancon of Louisiana and Bart Stupak of Michigan.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_health_care_overhaul
