As long as drug companies still produce, and doctors and hospitals still use morphine, there is a legitimate market for opium poppies, and a lot of it comes from this region of thw world.

Synthetic opiates have completely replaced opiates from poppies in the U.S. None of the drugs used in the U.S. are made from Afghan poppies.
