I know it’s a little different, but our family got a LOT of stares from people at our recent town annual parade, when we stood for each and every one of the flags that went by (bands, cars, trucks, floats, horses, etc.) We stood for most of the three hour parade, because of the flags. Every time we did, others around us and across the street did the same. So many veterans marching in the parade smiled over at my children, as they carried their large flags with such pride. I told my children to watch their faces — that sometimes, that is the only thanks they ever get for the sacrifices they made.

Parents are not teaching and passing on the respect of standing when the flag passes by. We have already had a class in “flag etiquette” (I homeschool, so I make everything a teaching opportunity).

I am teaching an etiquette “Manners and More” camp for girls next week. Never though about it, but your post inspired me. I am adding “Flag Etiquette” to my curriculum! Thanks for the inspiration!
