The ancient Celts [including the Gauls who inhabited modern day France] were “head hunters”.

Many beautifully silver filgreed skulls have been found and it is postulated that they were the skulls of vanquished enemies.

They would “drink to their slain foes” from their own decapitated skulls as a tribute and to “absorb” the strength of the fallen warrior.

As with many ancient peoples, the glorification of the strength of your conquered enemy was a boast of your own even greater strength.

[no one has really touched upon the issue of what happened to the *rest* of the dead guy...pot luck stew?]
