I was out at Golden West street one day years ago and had a kid about 13 who kept shoulder-hopping me. He did it over and over. This happened until he eventually grabbed the nose of my board and pushed off, pushing me back in the process. Pissed, and ready to drown his skinny ass, I was waiting for him to paddle back out to confront him. When he paddled back out he paddled right up to me and sat within a few feet from me. I asked him if he had a death wish and he told me go home. About that time I saw Rick, a friend of mine from high school. Rick paddled up to the kid and told him if he ever did that again hed never take him surfing with him again. Turns out it was Ricks nephew. The kid argued with Rick telling him he was tired of these inlanders and that we should go home. Rick told him I was a friend of his who had been surfing there since before he was even born. Given that he was Ricks nephew and only 13 I let him live.
This friend of yours, Rick, that wouldn’t Fig would it? (Rick Fignetti)?
I know he likes hanging around the North side of the pier, but has been known to travel. Last summer they set him up in Costa Rica to call a competition there. he said he has a great time.
