Ensign was separated at the time of the affair. He shouldn’t have gotten involved with a staffer, but this is a minor mistake. He ended the affair as soon as he reconciled with his wife and he cut off contact with the other woman (giving her a severance package).

I can understand why the cuckolded husband wanted revenge — but when he wants money for silence, he loses all sympathy. Almost makes you understand why his wife was wandering. Bet their marriage is in great shape.

Okay, I see. Thanks for the clarification.

So, while it appears that he was separated from his wife at the time of his relationship with his staffer, that staffer with whom he had the affair was still married and not separated.

So therefore, he simply had an affair with a married woman.
