Where has common sense gone? I have had to deal with dogs quite a bit, and shooting a 12 pound datchund simply seems uncalled for. How about a kick to keep the dog away while you draw the baton or pepper spray?

If a CCL holder did this it would likely be considered illegal discharge of a gun. Certainly a prudent person would not want to discharge a gun in a cul de sac with homes surrounding him unless it was unavoidable. Since he had pepper spray why did he not use it?

Just incredible. A pitt-bull, maybe we could talk, but this is utterly nuts.

Shooting the dog has become SOP. They must have more dog target than human targets at the police shooting range.

There's two things you don't want to be when coming face-to-face with a LEO, a dog or someone who's suicidal. They both usually end with the same result.

So much for Tasers, mace or batons. No need for them as long as their sidearms are working, apparently.

Pigs just love killing dogs. He was in great danger. This hero’s name should be publicized so we can honor his bravery in the face of such great danger.

Dachshunds can very protective and territorial. Their bigger version actually went into holes to get rabbits and badgers!!! Powerful little diggers and great lap doggies.

In my home, my miniature’s “courage” was to bark at the postman underneigh the car. Sheeeesh.

But still, 12 lbs??? A threat? Give me a fricken break.

The cop who shot the dog sounds like a 1st class idiot. It seems to me that some cops just like to shoot dogs and will go out of their way to do it. Nothing like trying out the .40 on a very small dog.

Look, if you’ve got to shoot a small dog, shoot a Chihuahua, not a Dachshund.

I have a dog exactly like this, except he's about 5 years old. All you would have to do is sit on the hood or trunk of your police car, and raise your feet up on the bumper, and you'd be totally out of reach of this dog.

It's unconscionable that an officer would hide behind his badge and "in the line of duty" for shooting this type of dog.

Simple response. Kill all of the officer’s pets.

He could have just dropped kicked Killer, the ankle-biter, into the adjacent yard.

But I guess the officer didn't want all that practice at the range to go to waste.

When I am attacked by Dachshunds I throw a foot in them. It makes the owners mad, but the dog isnt dead and they usually go away.Either that or after seeing the crap kicked out of their dog they pick it up and go put it away.Like they should have done in the first place.

A 12 pound dog? I am 100 percent pro law enforcement, but incidents like this are just beyond belief and only fuel hatred for cops.

There is just no damn excuse for this.

as the resident cop-lover around here, please allow me to make a couple points.

this would seem to be an overreaction by the cop.

the cops actions, however, most likely fall within dept guidelines. most depts allow officers to shoot dogs if the dogs pose an imminent risk or serious physical injury OR simple physical injury. and yes, a dog bite counts as that.

this dog was allowed to roam freely around the neighborhood. what if a child spooked the dog and the dog bit the kid?

i hate giving 'what if' scenarios, but dogs in a neighborhood should be in a fenced yeard or on a leash. if that was the case, these owners would still have a dog. shame.
