Back in ‘95 we went on our annual veteran’s home benefit motorcycle ride.
It literally POURED torrents of rain the whole way.
[about 45 miles]
I tied a handkerchief over my nose and mouth to try and stave off the worst of the rain.
That was possibly the stupidest thing I could have ever done.
The cotton was immediately soaked by the rain and I was literally inhaling water with every breath, my lips clamped shut to keep from swallowing the filthy torrent, too.
At 60 mph, with 30 mph crosswinds, the rain is actually coming at you horizontally and diagonally and going *up* your nose so that would be fairly analogous to this “water boarding” thing.
It was a miserable, stressful *45 minute* ride and I was SO glad when we got to the VA home that I nearly cried with relief.
*But*, it was nothing remotely like “torture”.
It was annoying, “scary”, uncomfortable in the extreme and aggravating beyond words...but it was NOT “torture”.
After endlessly griping about my inconvenience all the way across the parking lot, a legless Viet vet in a wheelchair reached up to hug my drenched shoulders and thank me for coming in spite of the weather.
You wanna talk about being utterly humbled by a survivor of -true- torture and sacrifice?
The whole water boarding deal is a classic straw man.

I find it interesting that both the playboy journalist being waterboarded and Hitchens being waterboarded had their waterboarders wearing ski masks. These are obviously guys who have done this and do not want to have their identities known. Are they CIA? Military?

One other thing, I don’t believe the B.S. that Kahleid Sheik Mohommad was waterboarded 183 times. I don’t think anyone could survive going through that 183 times. I’m guessing he cracked fairly quickly.
Another thing, the detractors of this say that people will say anything. Well, the interrogators aren’t asking open ended questions. They are asking specific questions that can be verified, such as where are the terrorist cells that you are aware of in the U.S. or where is terrorist X hiding out. When he spills the bean, they can check up on it. If it’s false, well I guess its back to waterboarding.
I'd bet Hitchens would have lasted a lot longer if they had cut that water with a nice 20-year old single malt. ;~))
