Roster Series Part 2: Wide Receivers
Much has been said about the Dallas Cowboys receiving corps so far this offseason, most of it dealing with the departure of Terrell Owens, who shuffled off to Buffalo, but Owens is history and the show, as they say, must go on.
There are two major question marks for the Cowboys receivers going into the 2009 season. Can Miles Austin step up and be a consistent downfield threat this season ? Can Roy Williams step up and be a consistent #1 target and earn the trust of quarterback Tony Romo ? Its looking like a boom or bust year for this unit in 2009.
Heres a rundown of the current roster:
Roy Williams Williams has all the physical tools that you could want in a top wide receiver, but he only had one pro bowl caliber year during his time in exile (ie playing for the Detroit Lions). But there are three major reasons why I think Roy will make Jerry Jones proud this coming season. First, you can consider last season a fluke. He played his first three games with Brad Johnson at quarterback, then only had a few more games to work with Romo before Terrell Owens started whining for the ball, and so Romo and Williams never got on the same page. While were at it, we can also factor in the plantar fasciitis injury that Roy suffered last year. Second, Williams and Romo have been working out together on pass patterns since early March. They are getting their timing down and learning what to expect of each other, which is vital. (snip)

As I sit here and bleed EAGLE green ,I must ask this
who cares?
Unless they can protect Romo all of this is moot.
Keep bleeding brother. I hear they used to do that in the old days to get rid of diseases like that.
at this point I am more interested in Spike-TV’s ‘4th & Long’ which you can watch online BTW
G-Men fan here.
Prediction: 3rd place again next year for the ‘Boys.
I totally agree tx. That’s why I posted another article on the offensive line.
no and no.
I think something needs to happen for the WR’s foe this to become a good year
I just found that thread.
I caught my first episode last night, it was pretty good. At least it’s something during the offseason. BTW how bout you guys hook up a fellow freeper and visit the link. Maybe after the navy I could have some sort of writing career.
bttt
Sppike TV has both episodes of 4th and long in full for viewing, it has ads in it though. I will click your link. Consider visiting my writing site in the tagline.
nice site, very clean
Thanks, I will do so !
I like Crayton. I don’t think Stanback was worth keeping.
Jerry Jones will have to find another whipping boy. Bye bye Wade Phillips.
Stanback has pretty much shown jack squat in his time here. Time to let someone else have a go at it.
You're right. The Cowboys' problem wasn't TO. By which I mean it wasn't only TO. It was TO and other locker room cancers like him.
The oline was inconsistent. Yes, but they were also pretty darn banged up and found out too late the depth was sorely lacking. See my article on the offensive line for more on that.
You do realize that Romo was injured for a month and wore a splint the most of the rest of the season - right? By the time he came back from injury TO was already causing his usual disruptions on the sideline and in the locker room. By the way I'm kind of interested to know how you know that Romo's mind was elsewhere. Are you a mind reader ? If not then you can have your opinion and I will have mine.
The defense was spotty at times but you can't expect them to stay on the field forever and expect to close out games in a positive fashion.
I don't see how the entire rest of the division has gotten better and the Cowboys haven't. In my mind they have greatly improved the team. The Skins did what they always do which is grossly overspend. The Giants paid way too much for Canty who is a mediocre player. The Eagles went out and got the worst (by sacks allowed) left tackle in the league and think they are all good. "Oh but he went to a pro bowl!" Whatever. And you realize of course it is against the percentages for the receivers the Eagles and Giants drafted to be able to help them immediately. Besides that the Eagles drafted a virtual clone of a receiver they already have in Desean Jackson. I don't see where the East teams have gotten better than Dallas.
Lifelong Cowboys fan and relative Freeper newbie here. Jerruh Jones can go along way toward getting that coveted playoff win (a mystical thing the ‘Boys haven’t notched in what, 12 years?) by firing Jerruh Jones and hiring a legit football mind to run things in the front office.
Just sayin.’
