Wonder how many retired Californian’s wouldn’t be able to afford their homes if property taxes hadn’t been contained by prop 13?

Gee, he's lamenting that Kalifornia can't tax the productive sector enough to pay for the huge non productive welfare programs they want. Much like they can't borrow their way out of debt. If only they had the political savvy of those clever Federal DemonRATS. Why, we only have to increase Federal Taxes 400% to pay for the interest on the insane spending spree Obama has done so far just in 4 months. Brilliant. Tax everything and everyone 100%. That should fix everything.

Liberal economists like Krugman believe that government and not individuals are the source of wealth and prosperity. They have developed an entire theoretical framework around that idea, whose primary purpose is the justification of theft by denial of property rights.

In order to understand that notion, you need to believe that your life's opportunities would not exist but for the government. In other words, your government is not your servant, but your master - or as liberals would have it - your protector or guarantor.

In exchange for guaranteeing your security, you are expected to cede a portion of your liberty and the greater your effort, the more you must surrender. This, they call a "social contract". I call it slavery.

Huh? Property taxes are the problem with the state budget? Here in Texas, we have NO state property taxes, only local and county.

It's the same here in California. No state property tax. We pay county property tax.

With the housing boom, Property Taxes rose as home values rose. The Government had a boom in Property Tax Receipts and spent all the money without regard for inevitable bubble bursting.

In my area, we have a 1.25% Property Tax Rate. the first 1% is set by Prop. 13, and the additional .25% is for the added on indebtedness due to Voter approved Bonds etc.

The Tax Assessor can raise Property Taxes by 2% a year under Prop. 13 rules. The recent devaluing of home prices is affecting revenues as newer Home buyers are appealing their Assessed Home Value that sets their Tax Bill.

We bought our home in 1992, and my Property Tax Bill has risen from $2400 a year to $3200 a year. I could not afford to live in this house if the Property Tax Rates mirrored those in New Jersey or New York.

Proposition 13 is the only way many people can afford to live in their houses, especially older folks on fixed income.

Krugman the Liberal cares more about Government Power than the Useful Idiots that vote for his fellow Democrats. Whatever you pay in Taxes is never enough.

They kept voting for liberals, so as far as that goes I guess they are a part of the problem. The courts throwing out the will of the people, Prop 187, has contributed to this mess too. One report I saw said that not giving bennies to illegals would save as much as $10 billion a year

The state of Texas is FULL of “Limbaugh Republicans” and Texas created more jobs in 2008 that all 49 states COMBIND, has NO state income tax, and last I heard, has a balanced budget.

Krugman proved once again that he is in total denial and is not emotionally capable of facing reality.

i agree here...we always hear about the cherish private property rights, and that is great, but why the hell do i have to pay taxes if it is MY private property?

if im paying taxes on the property my home sits on, why isnt the taxer paying for the repairs to that property? why is up to me?

how can MY PRIVATE PROPERTY be mine, if im paying someone else?

Ok Krugman, if Calif. budget problems were caused by prop 13, then what excuse do you use for NY and other blue states being in almost the exact same budget crisis, without a prop 13?

And this moron is supposed to be an economist? Sheeeit!

Sorry, I meant stupidest economics Nobel winner in history.

While there can be controversy, economics more of a hard science than what Gore and Carter won for.

“It’s inequitable because older homeowners often pay far less property tax than their younger neighbors.”

What are the chances Krugman believes New York City’s rent control laws are inequitable ?

For the edification of non-New Yorkers, apartment building owners in NYC are severely restricted in raising rents. Two tenants in adjacent apts in the Big Apple can be paying extraordinarily disparate rents ... a long term tenant might be paying $400/month for the identical apartment his neighbor pays $3000/month to occupy. But to lefties who reside in that city (and who faithfully follow obits to find just such a long-occupied apartment), rent control is just fine! Screw the capitalist landlord!

All depends on whose ox is getting gored.

OK, but then I don’t understand why Krugman is relating property tax issues to CA’s financial problems. Is he not talking about state problems, but rather local problems?

I think how it works is the state confiscates the local and county property taxes and then redistributes them from Sacramento to where it’s needed most. It’s criminal.

It’s inequitable because older homeowners often pay far less property tax than their younger neighbors.

Prop 13 was passed because old people on fixed income were being taxed out of their homes due to the increase in market value since they bought them. Krugman wants to put old people out on the street!

As for younger homeowners, they would benefit in turn if their home values go up.

It’s unstable because limits on property taxation have forced California to rely more heavily than other states on income taxes, which fall steeply during recessions.

Yep. Those darn businesses and individuals leaving the state aren't paying their fair share anymore. Property can't leave. It's so much better.

The Clever Manipulation of Projection and Paranoia
In, “The Necessary Enemy”, Dr. Zero has identified the crucial psychological defense that is required ...

Usually, such extreme partisans have an intense need to appear virtuous. In fact, the appearance of virtue in themselves is much more important than any other reality.

Reality is always redrawn in order to pump up their own righteousness and virtue. ....most consider themselves the ONLY reality-based community, because they get to define what reality is and it is always what they happen to feel. And it is always about making sure they feel good and virtuous and self-righteous.

Paranoia and projection also provide a rationale and justification (to the paranoid, at least) for acting out against those who—from their perspective— stand in the way of implementing their social programs; or will not submit to the will of their god (whoever and whatever it may be).
