The child would be a US citizen because the mother was, though not natural born. There was that thing about residency requirement back then that she couldn't meet. She probably didn't want to have to go through the paperwork of making him a citizen later, easier to fake a Hawaiian birth by putting an announcement in the paper and submitting for a certificate of birth.

easier to fake a Hawaiian birth by putting an announcement in the paper and submitting for a certificate of birth. Filing for the certificate, with a falsified place and date of birth, would generate the announcement in the paper.
