In what almost seems a gleeful pronouncement, The New York Times trumpeted America's powerlessness over the recent capture by pirates of a captain of a U.S. run freighter on the high seas. With an April 9 headline that blares, "Standoff With Pirates Shows U.S. Power Has Limits," the Times almost seems to revel in that taking down of an arrogant America by mere pirates in power boats.
It's quite hard not to feel that the Times is celebrating the enfeebling of the "world's most powerful military," here.
The Indian Ocean standoff between an $800 million United States Navy destroyer and four pirates bobbing in a lifeboat showed the limits of the worlds most powerful military as it faces a booming pirate economy in a treacherous patch of international waters.
But, does it really show "limits"? or does it rather show an American administration that is acting with extreme caution, instead? Don't get me wrong, I am not sticking up for the Obama administration here, but just because something hasn't been done as of yet does not mean that the U.S. military is showing its "limits."

It seems as if zerO is at the intersection of the failures of the last two democrat presidents. It is shaping up to be a combination of Clinton’s failure in Somalia (which OBL used to inspire the attacks on the US) and Carters failed attempt to rescue the Iranian hostages. HOPE he makes a CHANGE from the failed democrat policies of the past.
Why do we even have SEAL teams if we won’t use them. This could be over in 5 minutes if the person in the Oval Office had any stones. But no, we are going to try to lawyer them to death. I know how that turns out, see Jimmy Carter.
Where is the keeper of the BS meter when you need him?
The New York Traitor-times won a Pulitzer for covering up Stalin’s mass murder of the Ukrainians by forced starvation.
Let’s not kid ourselves. These waterborne terrorists are already “martyrs” across the globe.
Patience and negotiating and standing off serve THEIR goals, not ours.
Give them four hours to release the American, or blow them into non existence. Then, move on to the German ship, and do the same.
Put out a press release stating we acted in accordance with the law of the high seas, and will do so in each and every instance that follows. The world, at this delicate time, cannot and will not be held hostage by terrorists who attack unarmed, defenseless, merchant seaman, helpless on the high sea.
When foreigners and the UN complain, tell them if they don’t want us protecting international commerce in the future, they need to come up with a plan to stop it, or else we go into default protection mode.
How many more examples of American weakness do we need to give them, that which only entices them into attacking us more.
Once again, 0bama votes PRES__ENT.
That’s not a bad idea, if it would work.
Unbelievable.
I cannot tell you how much I would love to see the Sulzberger family take a sailing vacation in the western Indian Ocean.
And these America hating bums are in charge of the nation, thanks to decades of vote buying disguised as welfare.
