The percentage of Democratic voters is inversely proportional to the ranking for standard of living.

. . and wasn’t the money that had been designated for levee repair pocketed by corrupt politicians over the years as well? New Orleans was devastated, and if the levees had been properly repaired maybe that wouldn’t have happened. The name “Democrat” and “Corrupt” are interchangeable, and that’s just a cynical fact.
The current situation with Obama is infinitly worse than the one with Huey Long. Due in large part to the propagandizing of the masses through the media we have created a culture based on narcissism. When I was in High school, as is true today, there were the people termed the popular ones. The most important thing to these people was for everyone to perceive them as popular. Around these people you had the hanger ons who just wanted to be liked by these people. These hanger ons got their self esteem from the droppings of the popular ones. In essence this microcosim of society has now become our society. Just as the hanger ons were willing to take abuse from the popular ones to be near them, Obama supporters to a great degree are willing to suffer the same abuse from him. As long as Obama says he still likes and cares about them he can do anything he wants. Until we as a society remove the perception of popularity as being equal to integrity in the mind of the masses ie. everyone likes him so he must be a good guy, only the surface perceptions of our country can be changed.
Actually, a lot of them hate Huey Long because he opposed Roosevelt. They even saw him as a fascist dictator in waiting. I suppose if he hadn't challenged FDR liberals would have been more favorable towards Long, but it's only lately that Alan Brinkley and other liberal historians have taken a more sympathetic look at him.
I'd agree with Thurston that the long range consequences of Long's giveaway policies weren't good. Can all the corruption of Louisiana politics be attributed to Long alone, though? My first reaction is that there's just too much of it to put on any one set of shoulders, but maybe he's right.
Is Obama the new Long? One thing to remember is that Long got a lot of money taxing out of state oil companies, He could spread that money around without causing voters any immediate harm. And an impoverished population didn't care so much about taxes or corruption, so they worshipped him. Obama's on a tighter leash than that, and at some point he'll start antagonizing the taxpayers.
Purchase plenty of ammunition now.
