"Feed Me Seymour" Israeli scientists have developed a product that enables plants to tell farmers that they are hungry or even turn on the water itself. OK its not a talking plant like "Little Shop of Horrors" its a sensor that measures the stress of plants and their water levels.

Israel is a country with a severe water problem, and this invention will enable farmers to use water only when needed. It is projected to save farmers up to 30 to 40 percent in water use. More Below:

Israeli scientists have developed a new device that taps into the stem of a tree and when water levels are low, the tree can text a message, email the farmer, or turn on the irrigation tap to water itself.

Measuring electric conductivity inside the tree, a parameter of water stress, the Israeli researchers Eran Raveh and Arieh Nadler from the Volcani Institute of Agriculture, say that Californian citrus and mango farmers, banana plantations and vintners have already expressed interest in the technology, which can be programmed by the farmers themselves.

When I lived there back in the 70’s, they were working on dripper technology. Rows of hoses were threaded through the fields and every several inches or so there was a break in the hose and a dripper was installed.

From the other side, water and chemicals were mixed and flowed through the hoses, giving each plant a feeding. Best thing about it was, all the plants were grown in sand. There was no soil.

All right. This is pure hype. The plant does not “text message” or “tell anyone anything.”
A sensor detects low water levels and triggers the action. Why can’t news articles just say the truth?

you mean like it said in the intro “its not a talking plant like “Little Shop of Horrors” its a sensor that measures the stress of plants and their water levels.”

A few (or more?) years back I read about a sensor system developed in Israel; I think the test plant was a peach tree, and involved two or three of the sensors clipped directly onto leaves. When the leaves needed water, the sensors would activate the trickle irrigation system. IOW, the tree literally watered itself. It permitted a big gain in fruit harvest while cutting total water consumption by a significant amount.

Israel invented drip irrigation, a huge water saver.
