I think it's mostly by deliberate choice. For the size of those websites and their popularity, the ad revenues could be staggering.

They don’t mention the vile stuff that REALLY makes 4chan popular.

Really, really vile stuff... that scares off advertisers and attracts the FBI and Chris Hansen.
