Who did the Druze on the Golan... (for rightwing Zionist Avigdor Lieberman & for religious Jewish Shas) 02/12/2009

Who did the Druze on the Golan Heights vote for most? A surprise, or maybe not .. Not Labor , Meretz , United Arab List-Ta'al or even Kadima . No, the Druze in the Golan voted overwhelmingly for Yisrael Beiteinu and Shas . In the recent elections, 50% of Majdal Shams voters cast their ballots for Yisrael Beiteinu. In neighboring town Masad'e, 53% of voters voted for Shas, and 38% for Yisrael Beiteinu.... http://contentious-centrist.blogspot.com/2009/02/who-did-druze-on-golan-heights-vote-for.html

Hmmm. . . I guess the Druze judge that the Israeli right is better for the Jews than the Israeli left. I think they are onto something.

The Druze (an odd sect of Shi’a Islam into which one must be born) are commanded by their religion to support whatever other religious group is in dominant in the society in which they live. Thus Druze in Israel (and the occupied territories, the Golan included) are very pro-Jewish, and loyally fight in the IDF (They are the only Israeli Arabs allowed to join the IDF.), while Druze in Lebanon were pro-Maronite until differential birthrates and Palestinian immigration after the 1967 war tipped the balance to Shi’a Islam, so they’re now pro-Hezbollah. Not sure what a Druze living in the U.S. would do—take Protestantism as a unitary phenomenon and by supportive of Protestantism, or consider all the different sects as different, and support the Latin Church.

The Golan Heights Druze remained relatively loyal to the state of Israel and in return were given full citizenship by the Israeli government. Over 200 Druze have died fighting on Israel’s side in the Arab-Israeli wars.

Let’s leverage the good demographic news
[in Israel, Jewish births rising, Arab fertility falling]
