It is not so much a matter of a direct impact on “safety”, as it is in setting an entirely new precedent. These prisoners at Gitmo are in a strange place, being neither real “prisoners of war” (they are not members of any recognized army of any known existing state), nor are they being held in custody for any kind of criminal trial, as they have not committed any crime on US soil (yet). The proper disposition would be to render them back to the their country of origin (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Libya, Syria, the Palestinian Authority, Yemen, wherever), and let the governments in those countries administer to their wants and needs. And if they are encountered again on the battlefield, they are summarily executed on the spot.

But of course, that would never happen so long as the failing nascent obama regime remains in office.

> He said, furthermore there are so many soft targets in the United States, like a shopping mall, why would Al Qaeda go after a hard target like a federal lock up or military prison, when they could choose a soft target.’

Is your President truly that stupid, or is he being perverse?

Why wouldn’t al Qaeda hit a soft target — like a kindergarten, for example — and then threaten to hit another soft target unless all of the prisoners are released?

It can be argued that they could have done that while the prisoners were on Gitmo: it’s true, they could have. But by waiting until they are on US soil, they can play the States against the Federal Government.

The prisoners have to be kept in some state or another: whether it be in a federal or state penitentiary it matters not. All al Qaeda need do is choose soft targets in the state the prisoners are kept in, and voila! It’s State-versus-Feds to let the terrorists go.

This kind of naive, insane thinking is difficult to comment on. This man is going to really hurt this country, in more ways than this. A dangerous ideologue.

New Terror Scare in Saudi Arabia - Alert for 85 al Qaeda Suspects
In what is being described as an "unprecedented global alert," the International Criminal Police Organization
today issued its largest-ever most wanted list for 85 terrorist suspects,
who are sought by Saudi Arabia for allegedly plotting attacks
against the country and for suspected links to al Qaeda.
"Never before has INTERPOL been asked to alert the world
about so many dangerous fugitives at one time,"
said Secretary General Ronald K. Noble in a statement.
"We know that we are approaching the
16th anniversary of the first World Trade Center bombing on Feb. 26, 2009
and therefore must be especially vigilant of fugitive al Qaeda terrorists."

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to (have their citizens suffer and) repeat it."

USS Cole (DDG 67) post October 12, 2000.

"When Obama took office, he ordered that the USS Cole trial be suspended.
There were several defendants. All the military judges agreed. One did not.
The presiding judge has sole authority.
With cogent reasoning, the chief judge, Army Colonel James Pohl, stated that postponing proceedings
against Abd al Rahim al Nashiri would harm the public interest in a speedy trial."

“Is your President truly that stupid, or is he being perverse?”

That’s a tough one. Does it have to be A/B or can I opt for C - all of the above?

Obama seemed comfortable and not worried about security by having Guantanamo detainees in a federal lock up...

Fine, then let him house them on the White House grounds!

“Burlingame relayed Obama seemed comfortable and not worried about security by having Guantanamo detainees in a federal lock up...”

The issue is not security, the issue is constitutional. We can’t keep anyone locked up in a US prison without a trial. That was the primary reason for putting them in GITMO in the first place. They aren’t POWs since they weren’t part of a country’s army, they are terrorist detainees. If Obama brings them to the US we will either have to free them or put them on trial, neither of which is acceptable.

If these prisoners are sent to federal institutions, they cannot be put into general pop. As we have learned with gangs, gang members run their gangs just as well from inside the clinker as they do on the street. So the only alternative is to stick these losers in solitary. How is that better treatment?

So true...and that’s the problem with electing lawyers as President.
