Teens, yikes!!
What is that doing to the orange growers?
Seems I recall a reference to the “orange line”, a hypothetical line limiting the most northern latitude where oranges are grown. The story went that Mark Twain, in “Life on the Mississippi” mentioned orange groves in Natchez. If true, it would mean the orange line is moving south.
Wonder where the orange line is these days?
Won’t know about the crops for a few days what the damage is. There is going to be plenty.
What no one is paying any attention to is as the Earth’s climate goes cold, growing seasons shorten and crops fail. Food gets in short supply. Cold is much worse than hot.
The current Florida Orange growing area runs from Tampa Bay to south of Melbourne down to Miami and north of the Everglades to the Venice area. Almost all of this area hit freezing last night but not a lengthy hard freeze that would kill the trees.
When I moved to this area in the late 70s, the Orange belt was significantly larger and extended up to a line roughly from Ocala to St.Augustine and there were some groves up to the I-10 corridor. A series of 4 Freeze events (1981/82/83/85) killed 40% of all Florida Citrus Trees and almost 100% of those north of the current line.
I can remember trips north with miles upon miles of dead groves. The farmers had no money to clear them and they had nothing to replace them. Yet this too was a time of 'Global Warming' according to the 'Accepted Scientific Consensus'! And now we have Obama's new Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, is saying that California could lose all of its agriculture to 'Global Warming', the bleating of a 'True Believer'!
