"Why on earth would 168 leading republicans in the RNC pick the most moderate candidate after such a huge defeat of the centrist, moderate McCainiacs Disease in 2008?" http://conservativeamerican.org/conservatives/does-this-sound-conservative/

they are all sorta conservative
If Rush supports Steele enthusiastically I’ll bite my tongue....I swear.....I don’t dislike Steele, I like him actually I would just like a more firebrand righty
as silly as it sounds right now Limbaugh is my mouthpiece politically....bigtime
He cofounded a liberal GOP group with Whitman and then left it when he started this run.
He has made commenst on RKBA less than desirable.
He moved left to run in Maryland....pragmatic I know.
He preaches big tent and solicitaing more moderate voters all the time....that is his schtick.
I fail to see that as aplus. I’d prefer someone who drives home Reagan-Rush-Early Newt ideology.
That’s just me.
I love Palin, no secret to anyone here who knows me.
This is from newsweek last nite:
“The GOP today elected its first black chairman — former Maryland Lieutenant Governor and Fox News commentator Michael Steele. Steele, the most moderate of the Republican candidates who ran for the chairmanship, is a pro-life Catholic and an advocate of limited government and lower taxes.
According to the Associated Press, it took six rounds of voting to select Steele as he defeated the incumbent party chief and three other challengers.
Although he personally opposes the federal marriage amendment, Steele has said he would support the amendment as chairman because it is in the party’s platform. In his acceptance speech, he continued with his tone of inclusiveness.
“We’re going to say to friend and foe alike: We want you to be a part of us, we want you to with be with us, and for those who wish to obstruct, get ready to get knocked over,” Steele said.”
Vote American Conservative Party in 2010.
Dang, Switzerland is more conservative than the head of the Republican party.
There, at least, heads of households are required to have a functioning assault rifle... and know how to use it.
Weekly Standard:
Segments of the conservative movement have been questioning Michael Steele’s commitment to conservative values, particularly social issues, posing the first obstacle in his bid for RNC chair.
At issue is his part in founding the centrist, pro-choice Republican Leadership Council with Christine Todd Whitman and John Danforth, whose mission includes embracing fiscally conservative candidates with diverse social views. But Steele told the Washington Times this week that he is no longer on the RLC’s board, having left in spring of this year when the organization began getting involved in Republican primaries (audio, here):
“I shouldn’t be listed on their site because I’m not on their board anymore...I have a fundamental issue with organizations getting involved in primaries, and the organization was endorsing candidates in primaries, which I am fundamentally opposed to...I get what you’re trying to do, but if you do it in a way that will alienate people, then it’s not ultimately to the benefit of the party...I can’t be a part of that.”
RLC’s mission, as stated by the group’s website:
Inspired by a drive to get back to the fundamentals of the Republican Party, Senator John Danforth, Lt. Governor Michael Steele, and Governor Christine Todd Whitman created the political organization the Republican Leadership Council, which advocates for the historic Republican principles of liberty, individual responsibility, and personal freedom.
RLC-PAC’s vision is a Republican Party that is unified by the basic tenets of fiscal responsibility and personal freedom, but that allows for diverse opinions on social issues by its members.
If you’re having a “one of these things is not like the other” moment in reading that line-up, you’re not alone. Whitman is constantly and openly at odds with social conservatives in the party and Danforth has become recently critical of the influence religious conservatives have, writing in 2005, “Republicans have transformed our party into the political arm of conservative Christians.”
DU loves Steele too btw
they consider him a thumb in the eye to social conservatives.....whom I guess they think are all racist
>> tell me if you think this group represents conservative values
As a conservative, I would not be allied with Christine Whitman in any way, shape, or form. I did read the page you link, but I really didn’t need to. Just the name says it all.
I am very concerned about Steele’s 2nd amendment softness.
Mind you, I think Steele is a better pick than Duncan, only in the “they all suck, but Steele sucks less” sort of way.
Since I don’t currently support the RNC and have no plans to do so until they prove worthy, I guess my opinion really doesn’t matter anyway. But there it is, FWIW.
but Steele is sorta pliable so if by some chance a hard right wind blows his way, he'll accommodate it to keep his power
but let's be honest ...were Steele white , like Obama he'd be nobody
Yep thats how I feel about it too. She's part of the problems in the GOP not the solution.
>> but let’s be honest ...were Steele white , like Obama he’d be nobody
True, but let’s carry the honesty further and admit that there wasn’t a single non-triangulating conservative running among the six (sorry Blackwell supporters, not even him).
In turn, that reflects the chamber-o’-commerce big-government elected-for-life moderate-kissass leanings of the RNC and, sadly, 70% of the republican party at local, state, and federal level.
Your tag line is a good summary of the problem.
I think all this rush to judgment is all very premature. Why don’t we give the guy a chance and let’s just see where he stands on what.
agreed. But there are people who will damn any republican who does not agree to the nth degree with their opinions.
It is expectation of some kind of echo chamber politically.
We all stand in awe of your purity.
>> We all stand in awe of your purity.
Is that a hint of sarcasm I detect in your post?
Look, FRiend, you do what you want. I’m only saying what I intend to do.
In my opinion, future hope lies not in abandoning conservatism but in embracing it. The RNC is currently of, by, and for RINOs, and supporting RINOs is simply not the way to get the republican party back to conservatism.
In order to form a successful political party, one has to ally one’s self with those with whom they disagree on a number of issues. Would you really rather have Whitman and her supporters join the Democrats? Our numbers are few already.
and help elect Democrats.
I'm 62 and I through waiting for Barry Goldwater's ghost to take over the GOP. Next time I'll vote for a conservative if I have to write in my wife's name to do so. You go ahead and vote for the next Rockefeller-Bush-McCain.
