My old laptop did this accompanied by ticking noises.
It was the hard drive in my case.
But it could be the video card if you hear no ticks.

Try logging in to Safe Mode. To do this, as soon as you get past the POST bootup (where it adds up your RAM) start tapping F8 repeatedly. At some point you should get a DOS screen asking you how to boot windows. Choose “Safe Mode”.

If you get the problem in Safe Mode too then you may want to shut it all down, unplug your video cord, open the case and unseat / reseat the video card and try again.

If that doesn’t fix it your video card is *most likely* toast.

Check the cables, unplug them and plug them back in. Unplug the computer, open the case, and remove/re-seat the video card too. Clean out any accumulated dust in there while you have it open. If you have a different monitor or can borrow one, try a different monitor to see if it is the computer or the monitor...

My guess would be the power supply or the capacitors failing on the motherboard.

I’d squirt about 2 oz’s of RPM in there, after taking the bucket hose loose with a left handed Crescent wrench.

If that doesn’t work, then try taking a Sharpee, and (very carefully and in block print) writing APPLE on the faceplate.

I’m sure that’ll do the trick. :O)
